The spring 2004 Couture auction features numerous exquisite examples of both American and European fashion design and construction. From the personal collection of the Marquesa de San Damian is a selection of couture from the early 1960s, including Givenchy’s backless bulb dress, a unique floral beaded Pucci shift dress, Dior couture ensembles from autumn/winter 1961, a jeweled bodice gown and metallic striped pant suit from Valentino's first collection, and other inspired outfits by Balenciaga and Chanel. From the estate of designer Pauline Trigere are items from her private museum collection, among them a pearl embroidered champagne satin halter dress from 1950 and a floral print cotton beach ensemble. English designer Ossie Clark, celebrated in a recent retrospective at London’s V&A Museum, is represented by an early 1970s black chiffon wrap long dress with a Celia Birtwell tulip discharge print. Also featured is Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren’s early 1980s grey wool stylised Crombie double-breasted coat for World's End. American luxury is represented by Galanos, Norell, Giorgio di Sant Angelo and Claire McCardell among others. A highlight of the early pieces in the auction is Paul Poiret’s rare shimmering metallic weave lime and gold shantung aba, an example of which is illustrated in Poiret by Yvonne Deslandres. In addition, the sale includes handbags by Hermes and Pucci, cases by Louis Vuitton, and a fine assortment of costume jewelry, accessories and world textiles.

Too Much Information?

Talk about too much information. Yesterday’s New York Post featured a column in Page Six, ‘Kimora’s computerized closet’, where we were all treated to an in depth description of some of Kimora Lee Simmons’ personal possessions and other ‘inside’ information- which had been recently reported in Harper’s Bazaar. I for one, could not only care LESS about any of this, but it succeeded in reinforcing my already negative opinion of this publicity crazy, egotistic, materialistic, self involved, and over the top wife of Russell Simmons who not only fails in her attempts to design (in my opinion), but who also tends to show a bit too much of herself in public (a recent shot of her at some gala had her looking no better than a common- though expensively dressed- street walker). Ugh!

According to the article, in addition to her 49,000 square foot mansion in Saddle River, N.J. complete with 15 bedrooms, 20 bathrooms, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a 15 seat screening room, she has an “eye popping assortment of jewelry” (including a 25 carat Asscher-cut diamond that “looks like you’re wearing a light bulb on your finger”), owns two Bentleys, a Mercedes SUV, a Range Rover, and is “eyeing a new Ferrari”, has “the world’s biggest collection of Louis Vuitton bags and so many clothes- including 300 pairs of jeans and piles of Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo and Chanel shoes- that she’s having every item in her closet catalogued on computer”. She also has five maids, four assistants, two live-in nannies, a chef and two drivers, and her trainer, hairstylist, and makeup artists are on call. How’s that for some sobering information? I guess you can say that she almost single handedly keeps the fashion and beauty industry in business.

7thonSixth's "The Daily" Going Online:

We hear from an inside source that "The Daily" a tabloid magazine published daily during 7thonSixth fashion weeks both in NY and LA by IMG is now set to go online with an all-year-round internet edition. Brandusa Niro, the editor of "The Daily" has been anxious to get an online version of "The Daily" up for some time. As many of you may remember, Brandusa was the original editor of Fashionwiredaily.com who was fired over a year ago after a change in management at the website. Perhaps this is going to be a little pay back time as she seems set to compete with FWD.

Spring Has Sprung:

Luella Bartley Leather Satchel

Well, on 56th street, anyway. Neiman Marcus just unveiled what they consider to be ‘the best of Fashion Accessories for Spring 2004’ at the Chambers Hotel, hosted by Ken Downing, Vice President Corporate Public Relations and Sandra Wilson, Accessories Fashion Director. As usual, the duo set up camp in one of the modernist hotel’s suites, filling the rooms not with furniture, but with the shoes, scarves, bags, jewelry, and lingerie that they feel strongly about for the coming season.

What a nice treat on a dark rainy December day, to walk in and view the colorful and appealing prints and patterns (including florals, butterflies, an array of eye- catching and graphic versions from the house of Pucci, and Prada’s Venice travel prints); a well edited selection of Tanner Kroll and Luella Bartley bags (including the latter’s must have, classic, and timeless luggage leather satchel - see photo above); couture quality sports inspired shoes and bags (“sports are an entire category” proclaimed Ms. Wilson) which also included some really chic Chanel sneakers and some of the new and well priced offerings from Juicy Couture; linear and long drop earrings from Filigrani, Jose Barrera and Miguel Assis; and a very seductive display of girlie/romantic lingerie (especially corsets and bras) by La Perla, Bas Bleu, and Cadolle that are quite frankly, too pretty to hide. Of course, that is precisely the point- this season is all about underwear as outerwear, as seen on some of the most influential runways around the world- not the least of which was Proenza Schouler who did it in a completely un-vulgar way.

What else is high on Neiman’s list? The color yellow (all shades), shades of green (from grass green to offbeat lime and chartreuse), black and white (as in spectator shoes and bags) nude and flesh toned accessories, exotic leather and snakeskin, and let us not forget - gold and anything else that sparkles, shines, and glitters ( see photo ) . In fact, spring will be a time to shine if Neiman’s has anything to say about it (as of course, they always do).

Lookonline.com Celebrates 9 Years Online:

(Invitation to December 1 1994 Launch/Benefit Party)

Since the official launch on December 1, 1994 as a BBS dial-up service, the Lookonline has been online for over 9 years. In fact, we were a BBS service by subscription first beginning in late 1993 and in March of 1995 we began a website (under another domain name) in addition to our BBS site. Later in 1995 we discontinued our BBS service and concentrated on developing our website using our own domain name lookonline.

Our official launch was a party/benefit called "CyberTaste" for the "Charge Against Hunger" program from American Express and Share Our Strength on December 1, 1994 (see above invitation) The event was held at Sony Plaza at 550 Madison Avenue in New York. Over 850 members of the press & public attended the opening that featured 13 chefs from top New York Restaurants serving their signature dishes; a designer auction, wine tasting, desserts, and a live Jazz orchestra. According to officials at Sony, it was one of the largest, if not the largest event ever held to this day at the Sony Plaza's Atrium. Major Sponsors for the event included American Express, Food & Wine Magazine, Tourneau, Romana Sambuca, Coca Cola Bottling Company of NY, Georgette Klinger, Colorite, and Sony Plaza.

Lookonline.com is the longest running online fashion publication in the world. We have not always garned the attention or notoriety of some other sites, but those in the industry who have followed our development over the years know we helped pioneer the use of the internet in providing real time coverage of fashion events, regularly scheduled video reports, market reports, editorial cartoons and original runway and event photography long before there were sites like Style.com or Fashionwiredaily.

We again want to thank all of our many contributors who over the past 9 years have helped our site grow and prosper. We will continue to work hard at improving the site.
