<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">Peace, love, Woodstock, and The New York Botanical Garden! <p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Left, Christopher Griffin aka Plant Qween, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Flowers are the enduring symbolism of peace and love – remember the Flower Children (if you’re old enough) who protested war and violence, choosing to embrace florals in the ‘60s? NYBG carried out the theme with mod decorated buses in the garden by Snoeman, interesting macramé art pieces which can be creatively added to by guests, crafted by Carmen Paulino, wood, steel, resin, and LED light ginormous flowers inside the conservatory by Amie Jacobsen, and an incredible painted canopy on the Conservatory lawn by Mushuman, just to name a few of the artists on view.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">James Aguiar in custom suit, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This has been the week of schlepping to Brooklyn (Wednesday night was their botanical garden fete), and tonight the Bronx (ugh, the agony of Thursday night traffic) in black tie no less, but the weather cooperated spectacularly, and the mood was festive. Men in particular seemed to have gotten the memo, donning floral dinner jackets or suits, including James Aguiar, who wore a custom-designed get-up that can only be described as a cross between Moschino and Thom Browne.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Victor-and-Jean-Photo-by-Laurel-Marcus.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50297" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Victor-and-Jean-Photo-by-Laurel-Marcus.jpg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Victor-and-Jean-Photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-225x300.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Victor-and-Jean-Photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-300x400.jpg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Victor-and-Jean-Photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-450x600.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Victor-and-Jean-Photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-600x800.jpg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Victor-and-Jean-Photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-20x27.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Victor-and-Jean-Photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-72x96.jpg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Victor dE Souza and Jean Shafiroff, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jean Shafiroff (Jean Austen, haha) went against type – no strapless floral ball gown tonight – perhaps inspired by “Wuthering Heights”/”Pride and Prejudice” in custom couture Victor dE Souza, complete with dozens of underskirts to keep it buoyant. Victor kept up the vibe in a corseted tuxedo jacket, high-neck ruffled shirt, and trouser-style denim.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Stella Jacob, Sharon Jacob, Cecilia Jacob, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chair Sharon Jacob, along with her daughters, Vice Chairs Cecilia Jacob and Stella Jacob, took to sequins, beads, and florals, as did Sarah Easley, who added a floor-length feathered cape acquired during her travels abroad. Another memorable chair was Holly Lowen in a beautiful robin ’s-egg blue pleated dress with big sleeves, and Cat O’Neil in a black-and-white sequin-flowered Carolina Herrera. Other Guests included Candace Bushnell, Cynthia Rowley, Dasha Polanco, Jason Rembert, Kindred Lubeck, Priya Shukla, Tunde Oyeneyin, among others.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Laurel Marcus &amp; Marilyn Kirschner, photo by Victor dE Souza</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An anniversary of sorts was remembered by Bill Cunningham muse Marilyn Kirschner in a beautiful rainbow-striped Issey Miyake caftan, which she also wore to this same event ten years ago and was photographed by Bill. Sadly, it was the last photo of her he would ever take, as he was soon hospitalized and passed away later in June.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Guest wearing a Carolina Herrera black and white floral high-low gown, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I spoke with an exhausted Plant Kween, aka Christopher Griffin, who had tended to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden ball, this one, and a few other floral events this week – he always turns it out in Christopher John Rogers. I informed him that he will probably get a bit of a respite now, as the NYBG ball is generally the last big gathering of the early summer before everyone takes off for parts unknown (or the Hamptons).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Holly-Lowen-a-study-in-pleated-blue-photo-by-Laurel-Marcus.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50304" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Holly-Lowen-a-study-in-pleated-blue-photo-by-Laurel-Marcus.jpg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Holly-Lowen-a-study-in-pleated-blue-photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-225x300.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Holly-Lowen-a-study-in-pleated-blue-photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-300x400.jpg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Holly-Lowen-a-study-in-pleated-blue-photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-450x600.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Holly-Lowen-a-study-in-pleated-blue-photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-600x800.jpg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Holly-Lowen-a-study-in-pleated-blue-photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-20x27.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Holly-Lowen-a-study-in-pleated-blue-photo-by-Laurel-Marcus-72x96.jpg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Holly Lowen, a study in pleated blue, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One nice feature of this gala dinner, besides the lovely gardens, is that there are not many speeches, and they are short and sweet. J. Barclay Collins II made a Bill Clinton reference to the 60s era pot smoking, but he “didn’t inhale.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/atmosphere-Marilyn-Kirschner-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50302" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/atmosphere-Marilyn-Kirschner-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/atmosphere-Marilyn-Kirschner-300x225.jpg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/atmosphere-Marilyn-Kirschner-768x576.jpg 768w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/atmosphere-Marilyn-Kirschner-450x338.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/atmosphere-Marilyn-Kirschner-225x169.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/atmosphere-Marilyn-Kirschner-900x675.jpg 900w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/atmosphere-Marilyn-Kirschner-20x15.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/atmosphere-Marilyn-Kirschner-128x96.jpg 128w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/atmosphere-Marilyn-Kirschner.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Dinner under the tent, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Guests dined on a spring bean salad, miso-glazed black cod, and a dessert trio of thematic petits fours, which almost looked too pretty to eat. After dessert, the dance floor in the stunningly decorated tent, complete with ‘60s accouterments, “groovy” covered chandeliers, and a good deal of Michael Jackson hits, became lively.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As always, Lead Chairs were Maureen K. and Richard L. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wednesday night was the 100th Anniversary Student Fashion Show fundraiser for the graduating senior class. The event, featuring student work in design, modeling, styling, and choreography, was held for the third year at Gansevoort Plaza.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“As HSFI celebrates its 100th anniversary, we’re proud to once again welcome this inspiring event to the Meatpacking District, a neighborhood where fashion, culture, and innovation come together every day,” &#8211; Jeffrey LeFrancois, Executive Director of the Meatpacking BID.</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The evening honored Principal Daryl Blank with the Legacy Award and Sharifa Murdock, Kith’s Chief Impact Officer, with the Visionary Award. &#8220;For a century, HSFI has discovered talent, nurtured creativity, and shaped futures.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tonight’s fashion show in the iconic Meatpacking District celebrates the students, alumni, and educators who build this extraordinary legacy – and the next generation who will carry it forward,” said Principal Blank.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Murdock said, &#8220;Being recognized by an institution devoted to fostering creativity, building skills, and celebrating individuality for a century means more than words can explain.&#8221; She spoke about the value of mentoring, but the thunder interrupted.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">More looks. photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After the cocktail reception at Serafina, the main event began as clouds rolled in, bringing an end to a hot, humid week. The decorative canvas swag bags, illustrated by HSFI senior Lyxander Espinal, included a student-painted paper fan and an HSFI umbrella for unprepared guests.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="826" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/more-parade.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50246" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/more-parade.jpg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/more-parade-272x300.jpg 272w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/more-parade-450x496.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/more-parade-225x248.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/more-parade-20x22.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/more-parade-87x96.jpg 87w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The parade continues. Photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And yes, just as the first drops landed, the students set sail down the runway in all kinds of eclectic, interesting looks. All ends of the fashion spectrum were represented, from Little Mermaid to Anime or K-Pop, from Goth to Grunge to Gangsta, from Victorian to futuristic, from polka dots to plaid, from flowy chiffon to structured satin, and a few nods to Met Gala-esque avant-garde looks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Platform heels, wet cobblestones, and rain made me cringe, but I saw only a few stumbles—no spills or faceplants. The rain gave the event a mystical feel that benefited the students. They didn’t mind their designs getting wet, even after debuting them earlier in-house for faculty and students.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I would love to learn more about the process, as they work with industry mentors throughout the year, who provide feedback and critiques to help guide the final designs and presentations.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="769" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/modelandchild.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50252" style="width:641px;height:auto" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/modelandchild.jpg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/modelandchild-234x300.jpg 234w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/modelandchild-450x577.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/modelandchild-20x26.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/modelandchild-225x288.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/modelandchild-75x96.jpg 75w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Notable attendees and supporters of HSFI included famed fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo – a previous HSFI honoree; the fashion model Carol Alt, who collaborated with the students on a repurposing project; and former principal (2002 to 2010) Hilda Nieto, who still shares a very special bond with HSFI.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Carol-Alt-Robert-DiMauro-2.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-50257" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Carol-Alt-Robert-DiMauro-2.jpeg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Carol-Alt-Robert-DiMauro-2-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Carol-Alt-Robert-DiMauro-2-300x400.jpeg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Carol-Alt-Robert-DiMauro-2-450x600.jpeg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Carol-Alt-Robert-DiMauro-2-600x800.jpeg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Carol-Alt-Robert-DiMauro-2-20x27.jpeg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Carol-Alt-Robert-DiMauro-2-72x96.jpeg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Carol Alt, Robert di Mauro, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And of course, all around fashion guru/long-time HSFI board member Robert DiMauro (there’s even a design studio named after him and his alumni father), without whom none of this would be possible. Di Mauro’s cousin Ilene Shaw also attended – she is the Executive Director of the NYCxDESIGN festival, which just wrapped on Tuesday.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There was lots of whooping and hollering as the students and some faculty, including Principal Blank, made their way down the dripping-wet runway. It was all reminiscent of a “Project Runway” meets “America’s Next Top Model” challenge—making a rainy catwalk your own — and all passed with flying colors!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="960" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Emma-Chamberlain-Mugler.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50196" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Emma-Chamberlain-Mugler.jpg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Emma-Chamberlain-Mugler-234x300.jpg 234w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Emma-Chamberlain-Mugler-450x576.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Emma-Chamberlain-Mugler-20x26.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Emma-Chamberlain-Mugler-225x288.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Emma-Chamberlain-Mugler-75x96.jpg 75w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Emma Chamberlain wearing Mugler</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">A maiden gallery, an “ambitious” exhibit, an ambiguous dress code, an Amazon takeover – and? “May the 4th be with you” must’ve been the charm as far as the beige faux stone carpet gala arrivals – I didn’t cringe nearly as much as I had feared.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The new (Condé Nast) galleries in the heart of this two-million-square-foot building make a statement,” said Max Hollein, Director and CEO of The Met. “Fashion is art – something that in our 156-year history we have always believed.” Apparently, commerce is art too, since these are the digs of the former gift shop, which has moved just beyond the maze-like exhibit.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The history of art is the history of the dressed body,” explained Wendy Yu Curator at the Costume Institute Andrew Bolton. “The history of art cannot be told without the history of fashion.” The exhibition demonstrates the confluence or juxtaposition of paintings, textiles, sculptures, along with a fashion mimic or inspo.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="563" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2813.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-50198" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2813.jpeg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2813-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2813-450x338.jpeg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2813-225x169.jpeg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2813-20x15.jpeg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2813-128x96.jpeg 128w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All well and good until you go down the rabbit hole of differing body types and anatomy, including the corpulent body, the disabled body, women’s reproductive organs, the diseased or disturbed mind. So much of the exhibit features various shades of skin-colored body suits that you would think Skims was the sponsor.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2772.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-50200" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2772.jpeg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2772-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2772-300x400.jpeg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2772-450x600.jpeg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2772-600x800.jpeg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2772-20x27.jpeg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_2772-72x96.jpeg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The “woke” and pandering aspect of this display hit me in a way that it’s probably not supposed to. Among the classical looks of Greek and Roman statues are the celebrated three Little People present, including Sinead Burke, who is the model for the mannequin placed, ironically, way up high. Several people in wheelchairs were also there, including adaptive fashion icon Aariana Rose Philip.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="897" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/sarah-paulso-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50199" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/sarah-paulso-2.jpg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/sarah-paulso-2-251x300.jpg 251w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/sarah-paulso-2-450x538.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/sarah-paulso-2-225x269.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/sarah-paulso-2-20x24.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/sarah-paulso-2-80x96.jpg 80w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Sarah Paulson</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>On to the Gala</strong>&#8211;I thought the “Fashion is Art” dress code was particularly challenging and was worried about the possibility of attendees with picture frames around their necks, which I’m happy to say didn’t materialize. Here are my notables in no particular order.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The Wun to Watch:</strong> I was unfamiliar with London-based designer Robert Wun, who launched his label in 2014 and has dressed many high-profile performers. Last night, he certainly made a statement with Naomi Osaka, Jordan Roth, Audrey Nuna, Lisa, and Gustav Magnar Witzoe.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Last Minute Save: </strong>Blake Lively obviously had her archival Versace with added “laundry” train in the works for some time, so the pressure was on to settle her lawsuit against Justin Baldoni, which happened yesterday. Not sure (don’t care) if Ryan attended, but he didn’t walk the carpet.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Most AOC Moment: </strong>That’s easy – Sarah Paulson in Matieres Fecales runway dress complete with dollar bill mask &#8212; supposed commentary on the 1% percent while in their midst. How meta!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Literally “Art”</strong> but Great: Emma Chamberlain in a painted custom Mugler by Miguel Castro Freitas, hand-painted by Anna Deller-Yee. There’s a fun fitting video of her and her stylist on Vogue.com where they unbox the dress. Honorable Mention: Also loved Chase Infiniti’s trompe-l’œil beaded Thom Browne.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Age Before Beauty:</strong> What were Bad Bunny and Heidi Klum thinking? Yes, Heidi is the queen of Halloween, but this is the Met Gala. And why were her eyes red like a bunny? Speaking of which, If he&#8217;s older does he now go by Bad Rabbit or maybe Bad Hare?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>No Minors Allowed (Unless they have colorful names):</strong> Nicole Kidman’s daughter Sunday Rose and Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy are exceptions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>No LSD – Just LSB</strong> – It was reported that Lauren Santo-Domingo, aka “the Tom Brady of fashion,” would not attend due to the Bezos involvement. LSB showed remarkable restraint in her outfits, both at the press preview and the gala – not even as much boobage as one would expect for her Cinderella moment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Those Staying True to Form</strong>: In a bit of déjà vu, Cher and Stevie Nicks surprised no one (other than the fact that they were there), and even Beyonce, Rihanna, and Cardi B I feel like we’ve seen similar looks before</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Better than the Hunk He Played on TV:</strong> Paul Anthony Kelly/JFK Jr. for the win. He looked positively edible.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Exhibit I’d Really Like to See:</strong> Anna Wintour, during the press preview, spoke of how this was a “full circle” moment for her, from when she had to “chase people to attend” the once-small event.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Her first Met Gala </strong>&#8212; “In 1982, when I was at New York (Magazine), I shut my eyes and bought a $900 Yves Saint Laurent cocktail dress at Bergdorf’s, which was way more than my rent” to attend on a “cheap after dinner ticket” bought by her editor.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is now her 29th gala, which has raised more than any other year (thank you, Bezos’). I would love to see that cocktail dress, along with other fashion icons prized early possessions (if they are retrievable), in a fashion exhibition.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">Women (particularly mothers), mentorship, and storytelling were at the heart of FGI’s 30th Annual Rising Star Awards held once again at 583 Park Avenue on Thursday afternoon. The event kicked off with an 11 AM cocktail hour where you could easily pick out the award finalists and have a chat about their product du jour &#8212; be it handbags, eyeglasses, cosmetics, jewelry, evening wear, or perhaps a new way to promote sustainability in fashion.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="733" height="1024" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Coco-Rocha-Laurel-733x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50076" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Coco-Rocha-Laurel-733x1024.jpg 733w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Coco-Rocha-Laurel-215x300.jpg 215w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Coco-Rocha-Laurel-450x629.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Coco-Rocha-Laurel-225x314.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Coco-Rocha-Laurel-20x28.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Coco-Rocha-Laurel-69x96.jpg 69w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Coco-Rocha-Laurel.jpg 750w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 733px) 100vw, 733px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Coco Rocha, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hosted by Coco Rocha (a model with an 8-year-old mentorship program training over 5,000 models from around the world, as well as a mother to three kids), a keynote speech by Ruben Toledo dedicated to his late wife Isabel, but with some important pointers for rising stars, was read from a comically giant two-part scroll.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="900" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Aiste-Hong-Ready-to-Wear-Winner-with-Frederick-Anderson_edited-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50080" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Aiste-Hong-Ready-to-Wear-Winner-with-Frederick-Anderson_edited-1.jpg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Aiste-Hong-Ready-to-Wear-Winner-with-Frederick-Anderson_edited-1-250x300.jpg 250w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Aiste-Hong-Ready-to-Wear-Winner-with-Frederick-Anderson_edited-1-450x540.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Aiste-Hong-Ready-to-Wear-Winner-with-Frederick-Anderson_edited-1-225x270.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Aiste-Hong-Ready-to-Wear-Winner-with-Frederick-Anderson_edited-1-20x24.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Aiste-Hong-Ready-to-Wear-Winner-with-Frederick-Anderson_edited-1-80x96.jpg 80w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Aiste Hong Ready-to-Wear Winner with Frederick Anderson, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then, a lifetime achievement award for Mindy Grossman, and a new award for Media Impact presented to Paige Desorbo, plus the usual categories previously mentioned, this luncheon packs a punch. &nbsp;Sponsors were People Inc., Simon G. Fine Jewelry, Hilldun, Macy’s, and Fanatics Foundation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Presenters included Alina Cho, Bibhu Mohapatra, Brooke Brinkman, Fatmata Camara, Frederick Anderson, Jason Schupach, Jeffrey Banks, Joshua Kapelman, Romero Jennings, Nicole Miller, and Sally Holmes, and co-chairs were Alyce Panico and Nancy Berger.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Marilyn-Marylou-and-Ruben-Toledo-Laurel.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50078" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Marilyn-Marylou-and-Ruben-Toledo-Laurel.jpg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Marilyn-Marylou-and-Ruben-Toledo-Laurel-225x300.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Marilyn-Marylou-and-Ruben-Toledo-Laurel-300x400.jpg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Marilyn-Marylou-and-Ruben-Toledo-Laurel-450x600.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Marilyn-Marylou-and-Ruben-Toledo-Laurel-600x800.jpg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Marilyn-Marylou-and-Ruben-Toledo-Laurel-20x27.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Marilyn-Marylou-and-Ruben-Toledo-Laurel-72x96.jpg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Marilyn Kirschner, Marylou Louther, and Ruben Toledo, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Add to the mix fashion icons including Ken Downing, Fern Mallis, Marylou Luther, and of course, FGI President and CEO Maryanne Grisz, and it’s no wonder those just embarking on a fashion career could be intimidated. &nbsp;Jeanette Limas, who won for Fashion Apparel: Eveningwear, remarked how when she heard “Fern Mallis,” she got nervous because she had studied her in school and dreamed of someday meeting her in person.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Vision, grit, and something original” are important, said Rocha, but “none of us made it without someone else.” &nbsp;Nancy Berger spoke of “identifying talent at a pivotal moment and encouraging it to grow.” &nbsp;Influencer extraordinaire Paige Desorbo said it was important to “figure out who I already was, then everything kind of shifted. &nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s not just about being seen, it’s about being understood. &nbsp;People can tell when you’re trying just a little bit too hard. &nbsp;Trust that who you are is enough and show up with that consistently.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="961" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Evan-Hirsch-Laurel.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50081" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Evan-Hirsch-Laurel.jpg 750w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Evan-Hirsch-Laurel-234x300.jpg 234w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Evan-Hirsch-Laurel-450x577.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Evan-Hirsch-Laurel-20x26.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Evan-Hirsch-Laurel-225x288.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Evan-Hirsch-Laurel-75x96.jpg 75w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ruben told a great story about how he “dove in early” by taking Isabel’s dresses (fresh off the sewing machine) to Pat Field and Henri Bendel, who both placed orders, although they had very diverse clientele. &nbsp; On starting a company: “Your business will resemble you, so think about that – it’s like dogs look like their owners.” Another valuable lesson he imparted: “Don’t work against yourself – no self-sabotage.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jamie Books, the winner of Fine Jewelry, was one of several women who mentioned motherhood. &nbsp;“Building something while raising someone is no small feat.” &nbsp; She was not the only one – Ashunta Sheriff-Kendrick, who won the Beauty category, mentioned creating her business while tending to eight (yes, 8!) kids (shoutout to her daughter’s 27th birthday), while&nbsp; Limas spoke of just having had a baby 5 weeks ago – you would never guess it by how she looked in her self-designed red gown!</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Ken Downing, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The theme of storytelling was also bandied about. “Today we celebrate not just talent but the courage of creators and storytellers,” said Maryann Grisz, wearing an absolutely stunning silver shoulder ornament by previous accessories winner Kate Barton, “Rising star awards are truly a journey for a creative person with business strategy.” “True luxury is not in excess; it’s in the details. &nbsp; The stones hold stories,” said Jamie Books of Mason and Books, winner for Fine Jewelry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Frederick Anderson while presenting the Fashion Apparel award for Ready-To-Wear railed “Coco Chanel started her business during WWII. This is not WWII, at least mot yet, but it is a time when Saks and Neiman’s are failing and we need to fix this!”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Surprise — the award ended up in the second tie of the afternoon.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="675" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_3778.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50082" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_3778.jpg 900w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_3778-300x225.jpg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_3778-768x576.jpg 768w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_3778-450x338.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_3778-225x169.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_3778-20x15.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/IMG_3778-128x96.jpg 128w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Interestingly, both ties (the other was in Accessories)&nbsp;involved designers at my table who seemed to have PR veteran Patrick McGregor (seated to my left) to thank.&nbsp;“Fashion is a team sport – no one gets ahead alone,” Rocha said as she closed the luncheon, quipping that since it had run late, she would be picking up her kid from school a little overdressed. Betting it’s not the first time!</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">A selection of Rose Hartman&#8217;s photos, among other objects, at the Todd Merrill Studio in Bergdorf Goodman</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">Todd Merrill is a prominent New York-based gallerist, dealer, and expert in 20th-century and contemporary design. The recently opened Todd Merrill Studio at Bergdorf Goodman is a curated, high-end exhibition space on the seventh floor of the luxury retailer, showcasing bespoke, contemporary, and 20th-century collectible designs.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The installation, which spans three rooms, combines collectible design, material innovation, and handcrafted excellence in a setting that feels distinctly New York. Rose Hartman, who has photographed the intersection of fashion, celebrity, and society in a way that defined an era, is quintessentially and unapologetically New York. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rose’s work perfectly encapsulates the city’s raw, unfiltered energy, glamour, and informality across five decades. Hartman’s brash style is best described as a fearless, &#8220;Tasmanian Devil&#8221; approach to photography, characterized by a relentless pursuit of authentic, candid moments in high-fashion and nightclub scenes. </p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Photo of Bianca Jagger by Rose Hartman</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 88-year-old is perhaps best known for her iconic photograph of Bianca Jagger riding a white horse through Studio 54 at her 30th birthday celebration, an image widely regarded as one of the most enduring symbols of the era. In fact, this photo inspired Todd’s early infatuation with Rose’s work, leading to his current collaboration. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This past January, Todd recalls visiting a friend who has a photography collection that included Patrick McMullan and Rose’s pictures, mixed together on his wall in a large group. “They looked amazing, each one has an incredible story behind it, and I thought how wonderful these would work well at BG.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The NYBG&#8217;s current theme for the 23rd annual Orchid Show explores this idea with the mysterious, gas-masked, allegedly worn for allergy defense but never seen without it, celebrated street artist/designer Mr. Flower Fantastic (MFF) in the exhibition on view now through April 26.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thursday night featured the annual Orchid Dinner at the Plaza Hotel, an event that transforms the venue into a vibrant oasis where both plants and guests showcase their creativity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the Bronx, visitors can view life-size floral tableaus representing city life, including a brownstone, subway, trash can, dumpster, car wash with a floral taxi, laundromat with terrariums, pizzeria with a floral pepperoni pizza, and a newsstand, all presented as works of art.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Midtown Manhattan, many tablescapes reflected and expanded on this theme, featuring elements such as a decorated water tower, city skyline motifs, a graffiti-covered construction column, an NYBG subway sign, a Tiffany &amp; Co. tribute with blue shopping bags, and illuminated butterflies reminiscent of Times Square. The event offered a vibrant visual experience.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ever-exotic orchid seems to be having a moment, as witnessed at the Paris Haute Couture Dior show – designer JW Anderson festooned several models with orchids cascading down their necks and shoulders. &nbsp;Orchids as fashion accessories will always be iconic, much like the daily trademarks that make NYC “the place dreams are made of.”</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">Whether you agree with Carolina Herrera (“The difference between art and fashion is that fashion is art in movement”) or more with Rei Kawakubo (“Fashion is not art. The aims of fashion and art are different and there is no need to compare them”), you’ll find the new exhibition at MFIT very enlightening.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Curator Elizabeth Way examines fashion and art through the last 250 years of the Euro-American zeitgeist. She determines that they are parallel expressions – “deeply connected esthetically and culturally, often drawing on similar social influences.” The idea of “high” art (painting, sculpture, and architecture) vs. “decorative” art (fashion) shares a “reciprocal stylistic relationship.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tuesday’s opening night party (the exhibition runs through April 19th) was a well-attended celebration of this concept. Notable attendees included Ken Downing, Fern Mallis, Freddie Leiba, Alva Chinn, Christian Francis Roth, Robert DiMauro, Kathy Prounis, Marisol Deluna, Nicole Fischelis, as well as former FIT president Dr. Joyce Brown and new president Jason Schupbach.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Exhibition &#8211; photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Guests strolled through the downstairs space, which encompassed over 140 objects, including garments, accessories, photographs, textiles, and original artworks from MFIT’s permanent collection.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tableaus are presented chronologically, displaying the art of the era with the corresponding fashions of the day. In the first part of the exhibition, the anteroom features the earliest examples of fashion that are also works of art. Georges Seurat’s famous “A Sunday at La Grande Jatte” is accompanied by a bustled gown mirroring the woman in the painting.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Inside the main room, Surrealist art, such as Salvador Dalí, is paired with Elsa Schiaparelli and Charles James fashions. In contrast, pop art, such as Andy Warhol’s, is shown alongside the Campbell’s Company paper soup dress and Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian and other color-block dresses of the 1960’s.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Exhibition &#8211; photo by Marilyn Kirschner</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some designers or brands collaborate with artists, such as Louis Vuitton with Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama, as well as with design/art partnerships, such as artist Ruben and the late fashion designer Isabel Toledo, who worked as each other’s muses.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="700" height="933" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Painted-Jacket-Laurel.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-49775" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Painted-Jacket-Laurel.jpg 700w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Painted-Jacket-Laurel-225x300.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Painted-Jacket-Laurel-300x400.jpg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Painted-Jacket-Laurel-450x600.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Painted-Jacket-Laurel-600x800.jpg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Painted-Jacket-Laurel-20x27.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Painted-Jacket-Laurel-72x96.jpg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Painted Jacket, photo by Laurel Marcus</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many of the guests strove to mimic the art of fashion theory in their attire for the evening, making it a moving feast for the eyes, whether you were taking in the exhibition or the attendees.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Various conversational topics included the demise of the upper echelon department store and hello to the report that Bloomingdale&#8217;s is scooping up former Saks and Bergdorf’s personnel while gunning for the higher end of the retail spectrum.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Other advice – buy a few important “statement pieces” of fashion, accessories, or jewelry that speak to you, then fill in with Zara – the old “high-low” mix works, as the status pieces tend to elevate the rest.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I asked Ken Downing for his take on whether fashion is art. “When I was at Neiman’s, we always tried to find the rare art-like fashion pieces for our customers,” he said.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you still aren’t sure if fashion is art, Curator Elizabeth Way is just happy to raise the question: </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This exhibition will garner strong opinions and spark lively dialogue, but whether you decide that fashion is art or not, fashion’s strong and mutual relationship with fine art is undeniable.” &#8211; Curator Elizebeth Way</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Upstairs, the wine and champagne flowed, and the lobster dumplings were liberally proffered. A fun mood prevailed on the pre-spring, post-fashion week evening, with relative warmth both inside and out.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">What do all Jean Shafiroff’s cocktail soirees have in common? For one thing, they support a charity that Jean serves on the board of and that, of course, donates to. For another, some of NYC’s most eclectic groups, from the worlds of fashion, media, politics, and even demi-royalty, attend. Lastly, there will be multiple hostess outfit changes – a true designer fashion show is guaranteed.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="744" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Rebecca-Seawright.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-49421" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Rebecca-Seawright.jpeg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Rebecca-Seawright-242x300.jpeg 242w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Rebecca-Seawright-450x558.jpeg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Rebecca-Seawright-20x25.jpeg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Rebecca-Seawright-225x279.jpeg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Rebecca-Seawright-77x96.jpeg 77w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Monday night’s event honored the New York Women’s Foundation, a well-funded organization founded in 1987 that helps underserved women to rise out of poverty. Their theme of “Radical Generosity” has been a good one, as Jean mentioned that they have raised over $120 million from supporters such as Bloomberg, Chanel, and every major investment firm.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I don’t want to live in a city where I live one way, and others live another,” said Jean during her speech and “citation ceremony” featuring Assemblywoman Rebecca Seawright. I almost want to mention her wish may come true once Mayor Mamdani is installed, although perhaps not in the way she hopes.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="800" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_1266.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-49422" style="aspect-ratio:0.7500095430774516;width:629px;height:auto" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_1266.jpeg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_1266-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_1266-300x400.jpeg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_1266-450x600.jpeg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_1266-20x27.jpeg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/IMG_1266-72x96.jpeg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As this is a very busy time of year, the turnout was perhaps a bit lower than usual; however, notables such as Joan Jedell, Evie Evangelou, Ruth Miller, Randi Schatz, Mario-Max Schaumberg-Lippe, Marsin Mogielski, Anna Rothschild, Katlean de Monchy, Susan Gutfreund (sans Lucky, who was relegated to the lobby with his caregiver), Vanessa Noel, Malan Breton, Michael Spinks, Lauren Day Roberts, Piet Sinthuchai, and other NY and Palm Beach denizens.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A lot of these same people were also present last week at Art Basel, where Jean hosted another event. It’s sort of today’s version of “A Moveable Feast.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="800" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LaurelatJeans2025-holiday-party_edited-2.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-49425" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LaurelatJeans2025-holiday-party_edited-2.jpeg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LaurelatJeans2025-holiday-party_edited-2-225x300.jpeg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LaurelatJeans2025-holiday-party_edited-2-300x400.jpeg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LaurelatJeans2025-holiday-party_edited-2-450x600.jpeg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LaurelatJeans2025-holiday-party_edited-2-20x27.jpeg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LaurelatJeans2025-holiday-party_edited-2-72x96.jpeg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While not a holiday party per se, the festive touches, such as the lovely Christmas tree, added to the bonhomie as guests discussed their holiday travel plans or lack thereof. Others recounted recent travels, such as Katlean DeMonchy, who learned while in Mexico that her next stop was Dubai for a professional engagement, with no time to return home and repack. Not to fear &#8212; she was told, they have a Zara on every corner and there is absolutely no crime.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As for our beautiful hostess: she wore two Oscars – opening the evening in a short strapless multi-layered 3-D floral bronze number with matching gloves, followed by a gorgeous fish tailed Asian influence gown and finally a mauve-ish strapless Malan Breton ball gown with shiny black leather opera gloves which, forgive me, looked like she was ready for everyone to go home so she could do the dishes.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph">On Wednesday evening, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), the organization that promotes American fashion and nurtures the industry&#8217;s designers, hosted a conversation between author Jeffrey Banks and the multi-talented fashion designer, television personality, and performer Isaac Mizrahi. The event was a celebration of the publication of Jeffrey&#8217;s memoir, &#8220;Storyteller: Tales From A Fashion Insider.&#8221;</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Storyteller, Tales from a Fashion Insider, photo courtesy Pointed Leaf Press</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Published by Pointed Leaf Press, the tome weaves the incredible tapestry of Jeffrey Banks&#8217;s life: a fashion designer who rose from Ralph Lauren intern to award-winning menswear creator and an acclaimed champion of diversity and classic American style. The memoir delves into his experiences, the people he&#8217;s met, and the lessons he&#8217;s learned throughout his prolific career.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The event was held at God&#8217;s Love We Deliver&#8217;s downtown headquarters. Among those in attendance were CFDA CEO Steven Kolb, CFDA Executive Director Lisa Smilor, Marc Karmizadeh, Patricia Underwood, Teri Agins, Audrey Smaltz, Tom and Linda Platt, John Bartlett, Gail Marquis, Carolina Amato, Nick Graham, Gary Walker, and photographer Jade Albert, who recorded the scene in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. </p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Isaac Mizrahi tote bag, photo by Marilyn Kirschner</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lisa Silhalnek arrived carrying her Isaac Mizrahi tote, a wonderful collaboration between Target and Isaac Mizrahi that began in 2003. These bags were given out at the fashion show held at Cipriani 42nd Street. I loved mine and carried it until it was worn and yellowed.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Left: Lisa Silhanek; Center: Isaac Mizrahi, photo by Marilyn Kirschner</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I always talk about fashion&#8217;s &#8220;6 degrees of separation,&#8221; but given the fact that so many fashion veterans were in attendance, I should refer to this event as 60 degrees of separation. Isaac Mizrahi, wearing a signature bandana and gold-buttoned black cardigan sweater, was his usual animated, entertaining self as he guided the conversation. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He began by discussing the book&#8217;s intriguing title. Jeffrey laughed and said that when you&#8217;re little and you are called a storyteller, it means you are a fibber, a liar in training, but as you grow older and wiser, you realize that telling stories is a way of preserving history, which is so important.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="800" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/cant-think-of-his-name.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-49346" style="width:670px;height:auto" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/cant-think-of-his-name.jpg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/cant-think-of-his-name-225x300.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/cant-think-of-his-name-300x400.jpg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/cant-think-of-his-name-450x600.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/cant-think-of-his-name-20x27.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/cant-think-of-his-name-72x96.jpg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph"> Publicist Dan Scheffey, Paul Aferiat, photo by Marilyn Kirschner</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Banks admits that he was asked many times over the years to write a memoir and said no because he thought it was too narcissistic. Still, after thinking about all the interesting, fascinating people he has come to know, he has come to see that as the connective tissue. </p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;What are the two motivations behind writing this book? I don&#8217;t like to be bored, and if you don&#8217;t preserve history, it gets lost.&#8221; &#8211; Jeffrey Banks.</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One reason Jeffrey wanted to write the book now is to ensure that his beloved mother could read it. Eleanore M. Marion Banks, the source of ongoing inspiration for Jeffrey, along with several other highly influential women mentioned in the book, will turn 105.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the book, Jeffrey talks about the 10 people he most wanted to meet, and by the time he was 15, he had met 7 of them: Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, Monsieur Givenchy, Barbara Streisand, Richard Avedon, Norman Norell, and Ralph Lauren, whose name keeps coming up.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="799" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Denise-Linden-and-Jeffrey-Banks-at-the-2013-FIT-Norell-exhibition-which-he-co-curated-photo-by-Marilyn-Kirschner.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-49347" style="width:670px;height:auto" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Denise-Linden-and-Jeffrey-Banks-at-the-2013-FIT-Norell-exhibition-which-he-co-curated-photo-by-Marilyn-Kirschner.jpg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Denise-Linden-and-Jeffrey-Banks-at-the-2013-FIT-Norell-exhibition-which-he-co-curated-photo-by-Marilyn-Kirschner-225x300.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Denise-Linden-and-Jeffrey-Banks-at-the-2013-FIT-Norell-exhibition-which-he-co-curated-photo-by-Marilyn-Kirschner-300x400.jpg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Denise-Linden-and-Jeffrey-Banks-at-the-2013-FIT-Norell-exhibition-which-he-co-curated-photo-by-Marilyn-Kirschner-450x599.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Denise-Linden-and-Jeffrey-Banks-at-the-2013-FIT-Norell-exhibition-which-he-co-curated-photo-by-Marilyn-Kirschner-20x27.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Denise-Linden-and-Jeffrey-Banks-at-the-2013-FIT-Norell-exhibition-which-he-co-curated-photo-by-Marilyn-Kirschner-72x96.jpg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Denise Linden and Jeffrey Banks at the 2013 FIT Norell exhibition, which he co-curated, photo by Marilyn Kirschner</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jeffrey was a teenager when he met Ralph Lauren, and Ralph always treated him like an equal and as a third son. In fact, Jeffrey babysat for Ralph&#8217;s two sons. Banks marvels that when Ralph received a one-of-a-kind CFDA Award in 2018, he made the acceptance more about Jeffrey than himself.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At some point in the conversation, Isaac began fielding questions and comments from the audience. I asked Jeffrey which fashion period he likes the most. He cited the 20&#8217;s and 30&#8217;s because they meant freedom for women and elegance for men. People had a sense of what was appropriate back then, unlike today.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="798" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Isaaac-Mizrahi-author-Teri-Agins.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-49344" style="width:670px;height:auto" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Isaaac-Mizrahi-author-Teri-Agins.jpg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Isaaac-Mizrahi-author-Teri-Agins-226x300.jpg 226w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Isaaac-Mizrahi-author-Teri-Agins-300x400.jpg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Isaaac-Mizrahi-author-Teri-Agins-450x599.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Isaaac-Mizrahi-author-Teri-Agins-20x27.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Isaaac-Mizrahi-author-Teri-Agins-225x299.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Isaaac-Mizrahi-author-Teri-Agins-72x96.jpg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Isaac Mizrahi &amp; author Teri Agins, photo by Marilyn Kirschner</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Teri Agins recalled the brown-and-white T-shirt story and wanted to share: On Jeffrey’s first day of work at Calvin Klein, he brought him a present: Brown-and-White T-shirts that his friend in Soho silk-screened with his logo on the bicep of the sleeve. Even though Calvin said he would never wear it himself, Banks had T-shirts from the collection silk-screened with his logo for the salesgirls setting up the fashion show.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While earning degrees in Fashion Design at Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design in New York City, Jeffrey Banks served as a Design Assistant to both Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. When speaking about one of his most memorable moments, Jeffrey remembers that at his first show, he invited both designers, the only time they ever sat next to each other.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It was a stupid thing to do, Banks recalls, because all the photographers just wanted to take pictures of the duo in the audience, not his clothes. But they supported Jeffrey by coming, and to this day, he enjoys a great relationship with both design icons.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="800" src="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Marilynand.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-49348" style="width:670px;height:auto" srcset="https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Marilynand.jpg 600w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Marilynand-225x300.jpg 225w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Marilynand-300x400.jpg 300w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Marilynand-450x600.jpg 450w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Marilynand-20x27.jpg 20w, https://lookonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Marilynand-72x96.jpg 72w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></figure>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Marilyn Kirschner &amp; Isaac Mizrahi, photo by Jade Albert</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As noted, Ralph Lauren holds a special place in Jeffrey&#8217;s heart. He remembers that in May 2018, Ralph Lauren received a special tribute, a first of its kind, given to the designer on behalf of the CFDA&#8217;s membership of over 500 foremost womenswear designers. While the evening was all about him, he made it a point to single out Jeffrey and call him the &#8220;best designer assistant&#8221;.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When asked about designers now, Jeffrey mentioned Todd Snyder, Thom Browne, and Joseph Altuzarra. &#8220;You remember the ones who have a particular vision and stick with that vision&#8221;. That&#8217;s why we love Donna Karan. And I know Ralph would hate me to say this, but Ralph Lauren is like McDonald&#8217;s.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You know exactly what you will find when you see those Golden Arches. And when you walk into a Ralph Lauren store, you will see cashmere, corduroy, tweed, etc. You need enough newness to get you to buy more, but you also want to believe in the designers’ lasting legacy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is why Ralph Lauren has remained &#8220;The King&#8221; for all these years.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gala Chairmen were Liz McDermott Barnes, Cece Black, Jean Shafiroff, and Ann Van Ness. The purpose of the French Heritage Society&#8217;s annual gala in New York is to raise funds and awareness to support its mission of preserving French architectural and cultural heritage in both France and the United States. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It serves as a key fundraising event for the organization&#8217;s preservation, education, and French-American friendship programs. The gala also functions as a social event to celebrate and honor individuals or institutions that contribute to French culture. In recent years, it has focused on large campaigns like the Notre-Dame Fire Restoration Fund, which raised over $2.6 million for the cathedral&#8217;s restoration.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Defining more than 130 years of French sophistication, the fashion house of Lanvin stands for French luxury, femininity, and heritage. Founded by the visionary Jeanne Lanvin in 1889, the brand is rooted in the mother-daughter bond between Jeanne and her daughter, Marguerite. Its guiding principle is &#8220;le Chic Ultime,&#8221; the quintessence of chic, embodying the brand&#8217;s blend of timeless elegance and modern innovation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Ball’s Art Deco theme was more than apropos, given that Copping drew inspiration from Jeanne Lanvin’s home and interiors, incorporating Art Deco Motifs, chevrons, and mirror-like embroidery in his debut fall 2025 collection.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Peter Fallon, Chief Content Officer, WWD and Fairchild Media, who presented the award to Peter, detailed his impressive resume. Peter Copping began his illustrious career in fashion working for Christian Lacroix in Paris, before taking on senior roles at Louis Vuitton, Nina Ricci, and Oscar de la Renta, where he was Creative Director in New York. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Peter was gracious, speaking about his love affair with France, his adopted home for over 30 years; Paris is where he has grown as a designer. Now based in France, Peter splits his time between an apartment in Paris and La Carlière, a 15th-century Manor in Normandy, which he shares with his husband, Rambert Rigaud.</p>

Jean Lanvin’s studio with a 2-night stay at the Bristol.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ms. Herlein ended the program saying that the auction raised more than $115,500, and the evening raised just under $500,000.</p>

There was a full bar, late-night bites, and more fun surprises, all of course with a French accent, bien sur! </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">FYI, you always expect to see photographers at these events. One nice surprise during the course of the evening was having your portrait done by one of two artists who roamed around all evening with their sketch pads in hand. When finished, it was printed out and also emailed to you. Celebrating the French joie de vivre. J’adore! </p>
