Once you’ve found a magic formula that works, why not wear it all the time? No question, finding a specific style, proportion, color combination, or set of clothes that you consistently wear and feel most authentic in is invaluable. I repeat clothes all the time and am a huge advocate of uniform dressing, which I believe to be the essence of modernity.

A recent article in The New York Times, “Jenna Lyons Knows How to Find Quality Clothing. Here’s Her Staple Wardrobe”, by Hannah Frye, July 10, 2025, focuses on Jenna’s unswerving personal style. As Frye observes, “Lyons is known for her consistently polished yet delightfully playful personal style. However, if you examine many of her outfits, you’ll see that her wardrobe is built on a foundation of well-fitting basics, which she repeats frequently.

Jenna is not the only one who prizes consistency. Albert Einstein is said to have owned multiple versions of the same gray suit to avoid decision fatigue. Notable tastemakers and fashion figures are known to wear variations of the same designs daily. Seasoned fashion editors are often fanatical about how rigorously pared down their approach is.

Diana Vreeland, the legendary editor at Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue who later became the curator of the Costume Institute at the Met, proved that her daily minimalist uniform, a masterclass in balance and intentionality, was an ideal foil for her bold statements and dramatic accessories.  Vreeland understood that restraint in one area allowed her to be bold in another.

Polly Mellen, who served as fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue before becoming creative director at Allure, passed away at the age of 100 last December. Mellen had a strict, spare look that was by no means boring, observed Marina Rust in an article she wrote for Vogue upon Polly’s passing.

Tonne Goodman, Vogue’s legendary fashion editor, has mastered the art of dressing in a black and white uniform. Tonne’s sister Wendy hailed her as being really “disciplined in her modernity, so it’s all black and white”, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s Harold Koda (who worked with her in the Vreeland years), pointed out, “She was almost exactly then as she is now.” She wore a uniform “that said everything about her: sporty, chic, confident informality.”

Indeed, my sense of style was honed by my experiences as a fashion editor. When I arrived at Harper’s Bazaar in the early 1970s (the best era for fashion, in my opinion), I was surrounded by fashion editors who were never overdressed or underdressed. And they weren’t dressing for social media or the many photo outlets. They dressed for themselves and radiated confidence and chic.

I remember China Machado, Bazaar’s fashion director for 11 years and the first model of color to be featured in a major American fashion magazine (American Bazaar, 1959), sauntering into her large corner office wearing faultlessly cut trousers, a silk blouse unbuttoned just so, almost always in black. The result was effortlessly chic, and it spoke volumes about China’s confidence, her knowledge of fashion, and her self-awareness.

I will never forget Carrie Donovan, Harper’s Bazaar’s senior fashion editor from 1972-1976, swathed in Halston cashmere (black, camel red, gray), accessorized with a turban, her ever-present pearls, loads of Elsa Peretti’s silver and horn bracelets, or Elsa’s iconic cuffs.

Anna Wintour and I worked together briefly at Bazaar. She was a sittings editor, and I was a market editor. Anna, who joined Bazaar in 1975, was famously fired after nine months. You can see how much damage that did to her future, lol. Anna wore a lot of Missoni and avant-garde designers like Kenzo back in the day, and she loved to show off her great legs, but she did not have a uniform.

Carrie Donovan, the senior fashion editor at the time, wanted Bill King to photograph all the single editors for the March 1976 issue, which was devoted to single women. Can you imagine how that article would fly today?

Like all of us, Anna’s look has evolved significantly over the years. With age comes wisdom. In the last decade or so, Anna has hit upon a fashion formula that works for her, and it’s one she hardly ever veers from, regardless of the season, the time of day, or the event.

Whether she’s watching the tennis matches, attending a gala, or overlord of the fashion industry, Anna sticks to a time-honored outfit formula. Anna’s silhouette is always long and lean. There is almost always an ankle-length dress, usually printed or patterned (pattern mixing is a signature), topped off with a fabulous ankle-length coat (a perfectly cut reefer or belted trench) or a highly textural fur, sometimes tossed over her shoulders.

Anna will almost always wear her large Chanel sunglasses, a tall snakeskin boot on a high but sturdy heel (a nude sandal in the summer), and those ever-present vintage Georgian Collet necklaces from the 18th and 19th centuries, which add a touch of color and sparkle.

They have become such a signature; on Etsy, they even describe these necklaces as ”Anna Wintour style” in case you are searching. While the result is admittedly not a good look for everyone, it suits Anna’s narrow frame, her lifestyle, her stature as fashion’s most powerful woman, and her age. 

Anna turns 76 in November; she looks regal, sophisticated, commanding, and very much in charge.

Undercover Fall 2025 Ready-to-Wear, Photo by Launchmetrics Spotlight for The Impression

Are dress codes passé? Based on what I’ve seen at recent events, the invites might as well say, “Come as you want,” “Come as you are,” or “Just Come!”

Having a dress code is a way for a host to frame an event and set a standard in hopes that invitees will get the memo and dress accordingly; however, fewer and fewer people appear to pay much heed to such guidelines. Instead, they dress as they please.

Unless you are invited to a White House State Dinner or a formal sit-down dinner with royalty at Buckingham Palace, the idea of a strict required dress code seems outdated, entirely beside the point if not altogether passé and irrelevant in today’s self-expressive world. It’s more about presenting the best version of yourself at any given moment than adhering to a firm, stifling set of rules.

In this topsy-turvy, wild, mixed-up world where so much is going on, who cares about dress codes anyway? Indeed, there are far more pressing concerns to be addressed. Besides, everything seems upside down. Nowadays, women wear long dresses during the day and shorts or jeans at night. I’ve seen women more dressed up in the morning on the subways than some attendees at formal evening galas.

At the Central Park Hat Luncheon, there’s always a display of full-on evening gowns, furs, jewels, and, of course, fantastical hats, and it’s not even 11:30 am. On the other hand, I’ve attended several recent “Black Tie” events where women appear to have just come from work, shopping, or running errands in the afternoon.

At the 2025 Met Gala, where the dress code was “Tailored For You,” there were more than a few guests who looked like they were heading somewhere else or would rather be anywhere else than the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on that First Monday in May.

The dress code for the 2025 YAGP Gala in April was “cocktail attire,” but it was hard to tell from many of the women, who were dressed to the nines in long gowns. The New York City Ballet’s Spring 2025 Spring Gala was a Masked Ball in celebration of New York City Ballet’s Founding Choreographer George Balanchine’s incredible artistry, with an exceptional performance of Vienna Waltzes. Many guests arrived sans masks. A few did not even appear to be dressing for a ball.

In keeping with the times, there’s no question that dress codes are evolving to be more inclusive and less rigid. There is a trend towards more relaxed interpretations, a greater emphasis on individual expression, and a broader cultural shift towards more casual and comfortable attire.

Perhaps that’s why we’re seeing more calls for “Festive Cocktail Attire,” Festive Black Tie,” and my favorite, “Creative Black Tie,” which take some of the stiffness and formality out of the equation.

Not that many of us need a reminder to keep it “festive” or to get creative and have fun with fashion for an event. Isn’t that the point? Of course, how one defines “festive” and “creative,” like the Rorschach test, is open to interpretation, but I have my ideas.

For me, “Creative Black Tie” is about thinking outside the box, bending the rules, adding an element of surprise, and mixing elements like day and evening, as well as high and low. It’s about adding a splash of bad taste, à la Diana Vreeland, and, most importantly, looking relaxed and comfortable.

It generally requires more thought and contemplation than simply donning a traditional evening gown. Sportswear components and trousers are often involved. Jun Takahashi’s ornate evening suit, complete with gilded shoes to match (the first look at his Undercover runway show in Paris), perfectly sums it up: luxe, unexpected, and just oddball enough. No designer can take a pair of trousers and make them look as fabulous, desirable, and as soigné as Pierpaolo Piccioli, the former creative director of Valentino. With his deceptively minimalist designs, his unparalleled color sense, his luxurious fabrications, and sculptural, poetic haute couture, PP is a master of “Creative Black Tie.” No doubt we will see more of this as Pierpaolo takes the helm as creative director of Balenciaga.

Among the fashion designers whose work consistently epitomizes the idea of “Creative Black Tie” are Thom Browne, thanks to his inventive takes on the traditional tuxedo, and Daniel Roseberry of Schiaparelli, with his boundary-pushing, fantasy-filled, and opulent designs.

At the recent El Museo Gala, Hiandra Martinez’s outfit was a perfect example of ‘Creative Black Tie’. She stood out in a room filled with traditional evening gowns, dressed in an appliqued denim coat and wide-legged trousers, embodying the theme with her unique and creative interpretation.

One image that always stays in my mind is Tonne Goodman at the 2010 CFDA Awards. When the iconic Vogue editor received the Eleanor Lambert Award, she was dressed in a black silk button-down shirt paired with a floor-length black sequined skirt by Michael Kors. It’s a simple, fail-proof, and impactful formula that never gets old and is relatively easy to duplicate.

While Creative Black Tie evokes the idea of evening separates, that does not necessarily exclude an evening dress or evening gown. But if you are going to wear one, make it great. Among the standouts this season is the vintage tri-color Galanos caped gown worn by Lauren Veronis to the New York City Ballet Spring 2025 Gala.

One of the best black dresses I’ve seen lately is the Vera Wang Couture gown worn by ABT dancer Catherine Hurlin at the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Spring 2025 Gala. Made of black parachute cloth with practical side pockets, the sensational dress was perfectly styled by PJ Pascual, who added graphic black and white striped pumps as a punctuation mark.

Victor dE Souza’s cornflower blue couture gown, featuring an ornate bolero and matching gloves with hand-embroidered ruched raw florets, worn by Jean Shafiroff to the 2025 NYBG Conservatory Ball, may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is unique and unexpected. And, it was perfect for the event.

Of course, trying too hard to be creative often doesn’t work; in fact, it can backfire, as illustrated by Coco Rocha’s appearance at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, dressed by Onut Razvan.

It is said that legendary fashion icon Babe Paley never had an unchic day in her life. Truman Capote remarked, “Mrs. P. had only one fault: she was perfect; otherwise she was perfect.”

Not many women can meet such high sartorial standards, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t modern versions who come close. My definition of great personal style is someone who masters the concept of appropriateness and is flawlessly dressed regardless of the occasion.

One woman who epitomizes a unique and inspiring personal style for me is Cecily Waud.

Living in NY and being involved in fashion for decades, I routinely cross paths with many well-dressed people, so I note when someone grabs my attention. I met interior designer Cecily Waud at Linda Fargo’s recent birthday blowout at Caviar Kaspia.

There were many fashionable guests at the party, and most of them heeded the dress code: Black Caviar & A Kiss of Red, but Cecily immediately stood out with her red paillette Valentino skirt, Dior blazer covered with black caviar beads, red Schiaparelli bag, and vintage Anne Klein shoes.

The look was carefully measured but not contrived. Waud looked smashing and comfortable and exuded ease and confidence. I was instantly impressed. On further examination, I observed a highly consistent, well-thought-out approach to dressing that demanded more consideration.

Unsurprisingly, Linda Fargo is another fan who is always surprised and delighted by this young lady who brings so much unspoiled enthusiasm and a keen eye to the front row. Linda says she is always informed and inspired by what Cecily gravitates to.

Cecily is a Middlebury College graduate who earned her M.F.A. in Interior Design from the New York School of Interior Design. The Chicago-born New Yorker sits on the advisory board of SAB, is a member of the Sloan Kettering, and the Guggenheim Young Collectors groups.

She co-founded LC Studio, a bespoke Interior Decoration firm with offices in New York and Palm Beach, with Lance Scott. They launched at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House in 2022, Dallas, Texas.

As the youngest designer tapped to participate in that year’s showhouse, Waud demonstrated her “impeccable eye for sophisticated yet stylish pieces,” observed Vogue Magazine writer Elisee Brochuk.

With her aristocratic good looks, blunt-cut platinum hair, and thoroughly contemporary vibe, Cecily is a cross between CZ Guest and Edie Sedgwick. Cecily looks terrific in everything she wears, at a willowy 5’8” with legs that seemingly go on for miles.

Cecily is fly fishing in Scotland.

Cecily is athletic and sporty. She skis, rides horses, goes bike riding, goes camping, plays tennis, swims, and loves to fly fish in Scotland. Despite her sport, Waud always looks hip, cool, elegant, and fresh.

Among Cecily’s style inspirations are Hamish Bowles (she loves the color purple), Coco Kopelman, and  Cece Cord. Melissa Waud, Cecily’s beautiful and elegant mother, is an ongoing inspiration, along with her 95-year-old grandmother, who still pads around in her Belgian Loafers. Proof that style, like many other traits, is often inherited; the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

As a dedicated follower of fashion, Cecily routinely travels around the world to attend high-profile ready-to-wear and couture shows. Melissa Waud is a frequent travel companion. Last month, they attended the Christian Dior Pre-Fall 2025 held at the historic gardens of the Tō-ji temple in Kyoto, Japan.

Most recently, Cecily traveled to Lake Como, Italy, to attend the Chanel 2026 Resort show held at the magnificent Hotel Villa d’Este. Waud is not explicitly linked to only one designer; several, including Valentino, Christian Dior, and Chanel, have creations well-represented in Cecily’s enviable closets.

Cecily is a self-described “loafer gal” with a penchant for Prada loafers, especially in patent leather, because “you never know when you are going to jump in a puddle.”  She also has a penchant for  Brunello Cucinelli’s silver jodphur boots.

Cecily is renovating a townhouse in the West Village. As she is an interior designer, this project is personal. Cecily describes herself as a “huge maximalist” who loves to layer color and texture and add animal taxidermy.

She promises that when finished, her home will look like a cozy English cottage with Fortuny textiles, Robert Kime fabrics, and De Gournay wallpaper. And, of course, the closets will be a focal point.

Sherry Kirschner Berz

Sherry Kirschner Berz, February 3, 1951- March 6, 2025, died at the age of 74 from complications following a stroke. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by everyone and everything she loved, as was her wish.

In addition to myself and my husband Charles Weintraub, she is survived by her husband of 54 years, David; her sons Douglas and Alexander; her brother- and sister-in-law, Neal and Linda Berz; and their children Sarah, Micaela, and Charlie. She was the cherished daughter of the late Herman and Toby Kirschner, who emigrated from Czechoslovakia and Poland, respectively, settling in New York in the late 1930s.

Sherry was the strongest, most exceptional woman I’ve ever known. As sisters, we shared a very special bond. Born and raised in New York City, Sherry pursued her artistic talent early, attending the High School of Music and Art. She continued this pursuit at the Museum of Modern Art and the Corcoran School in Washington, D.C.

While studying at the Corcoran, she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Speech Pathology and Audiology from George Washington University, where she was awarded a fellowship for her graduate studies.

Sherry’s husband David and I were members of the class of 1970. We both received our BA’s that year while my brother-in-law was a graduate of the GWU law school where he received his JD in 1973.

In 1992, they established the David R. and Sherry Kirschner Berz Fund for Religious Studies at GWU, which supports the activities of the Department of Religion to enrich undergraduate and graduate programs. In 1997, they established the David R. and Sherry Kirschner Berz Endowed Dean’s Discretionary Fund to meet the school’s most pressing needs.

A gifted artist, devoted family member, and dedicated community volunteer, Sherry’s life was marked by creativity and an enduring commitment to making the world more beautiful. Sherry’s artwork was featured in numerous exhibitions and galleries throughout Washington, D.C., and is included in private collections and publications.

Her passion for art extended beyond her personal work. For over twenty years, she was a docent at the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum, where she shared her love and knowledge of art with countless visitors.

Faith Ringgold & Sherry Kirschner

Sherry and David are dedicated art collectors. I remember Sherry meeting Faith Ringgold (October 8, 1930 – April 13, 2024) at the ACA Gallery in Chelsea. She could not stop talking about how incredible this woman was. Sherry and David subsequently purchased one of Faith’s paintings, which is proudly displayed in one of their art-filled homes.

A diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in 1967 resulted in ongoing health problems, one more serious than the next. Sherry never complained, and she never let them define her. If anything, it intensified her love for and appreciation for life. Sherry lived life to the fullest and soaked it all in. All her senses were heightened.

Art informed everything she did, from travel and architecture to interior design, food, and fashion. There was no question we were related. Just 18 months my junior, Sherry and I sounded and looked alike, and as little girls, we were often dressed alike. Our father was a clothing manufacturer, and we frequently had our coats made by a tailor. We got a taste of haute couture early on.

We inherited our love of fashion from our parents, who were not only movie stars but impeccably dressed for every occasion. They taught us that fashion has to do with decorum, self-respect for yourself, and others.

Sherry and I had similar loves and tastes and shared an eye for design and detail, but she had her own unique look. Unsurprisingly, much thought was put into Sherry’s outfit for burial. As a number of her friends noted, she was so innately stylish that it would be impossible not to factor that in, even at this somber moment.

As my greatest supporter, I know Sherry would undoubtedly love whatever I chose to wear in her honor in those last hours, but I put myself together, adding a necklace Sherry gifted me and a Chanel bag that belonged to her.

An avid tennis player, golfer, and New York Yankees fan, Sherry prioritized uninterrupted viewing of major sporting events. Sherry was dedicated to her synagogue, Washington Hebrew Congregation, where she served on the Arts Committee and contributed to the redesign and renovation of the main sanctuary, among other things.

Sherry’s commitment to her community was unwavering. She took on leadership roles on the board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (now Breakthrough T1D) and served as President of the American Friends of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Israel. Her contributions to these organizations left a lasting impact on the communities they served.

Her vibrant spirit, artistic talent, and profound love for family, friends, and community will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew her. For me, there is no replacement.

The extraordinary life of Mary McFadden, October 1, 1938 – September 13, 2024, was celebrated on Tuesday, November 5 at 583 Park Avenue. McFadden was known for her artistic brilliance, world travel, and influence on high fashion.

Her career, which spanned seven decades, was marked by her unique Mari pleating and designs inspired by diverse cultures from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and ancient Greece.

McFadden’s adventurous spirit was reflected in her personal life, which included travel to over 60 countries and 11 marriages. At this special gathering, she was remembered for her influence on fashion and her disciplined and fearless approach to life.

About 200 guests (friends and family) were present at the event, which featured mannequins showcasing McFadden’s creations along the balcony of the notable venue. Many guests wore Mary’s designs. Recorded interviews were played, such as her 1984 conversation with historian Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel.

It doesn’t seem like 30-40 years ago when I attended Mary’s shows and frequented her vast loft-like garment center showroom searching for beautiful dresses for Harper’s Bazaar’s photo shoots.

McFadden was the first female president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, serving from 1982 to 1983. Unsurprisingly, the CFDA was well represented yesterday afternoon with CFDA CEO Steven Kolb, Lisa Smilor, Executive Vice President, Stan Herman, former CFDA President, and Jeffrey Banks, a longstanding CFDA in attendance.

Also present were veteran fashion fixture Fern Mallis, Amy Fine Collins, fashion journalist Ruth LaFerla, jewelry designer Maria Snyder, philanthropist Barbara Tober, and the always colorfully dressed freelance writer, editor, TV host Christopher Mason, and fashion designer Caterine Sanchez who was Mary’s assistant and helped organize this event.

For guests’ convenience, the gathering took place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., with loved ones slated to share memories at 3:30 p.m. and anyone from the audience who wished to do so. Kohle Yohannaan, 29 years Mary’s junior and one of her ex-husbands, provided the emotional, entertaining, and enlightening highlight.

The couple, who tied the knot in June 1989, had a short-lived (22 months) and notoriously tumultuous marriage. Kohle painted a picture of someone who lived by her own rules and encouraged his optimism as a young person.

She was an adventurous, fearless, competitive athlete who was game for anything. Highly recognizable everywhere, rail thin with ivory skin and onyx tresses, Mary was always in 4-inch heels. Even wearing tennis shoes, Mary seemed to be teetering in stilettos observes Kohle

“Mary had a pedigreed personal style with a permanence impervious to trends. A mix of old-guard high society and beat-generation bohemianism, Mary was glamorous uptown and cool downtown. She was profoundly different. There was no one like her.” – Kohle Yohannan

Kohle likened Mary to PT Barnum in that she had the mystical ability to empower women and get them in touch with their own inner goddesses because that is what she did for herself daily. He observes that Mary seamlessly identified with popular culture and easily straddled the realms of creativity and history.

“Not every designer designs things for posterity; they design for the day” observes Kohle. As he notes, perhaps the best of fashion isn’t in the present. It might be in the past. Maybe it’s in the future. Mary had her feet in both worlds.

Mary lead a self-determined life as an adventurer, a rebel, a dedicated scholar and a really true romantic. Gone but never forgotten, Mary lived true to herself. In fact, Mary truly lived says Kohle, who emphasized the word, ‘truly’.

He encouraged everyone to look around and learn more about Mary McFadden and the McFadden Family’s Drexel University connection and the project to preserve her legacy for future designers.

Playground Partners, a program of the Women’s Committee of the Central Park Conservancy, kicked off the year’s series of signature fundraising events by hosting their annual Winter Luncheon. The event was held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, with generous support from Presenting Sponsor Harry Winston and Premier Sponsor Jimmy Choo. It raised over $305,000 to maintain Central Park’s 21 playgrounds: essential, safe, and accessible areas of imaginative play for the children and families of New York City.

This private, nonprofit organization is geared toward families with children 11 and under. They host two annual fundraising events, the Annual Family Party, held in May, and the Winter Luncheon, successfully launched over ten years ago and continues to raise vital funds for Central Park’s beloved play spaces.

Among the notable guests were Betsy Smith, CEO and President of the Central Park Conservancy, and Sharon Jacob, who flew up from Florida, where she is wintering with her family. Sharon, who always looks lovely and perfectly accessorized, serves as Executive Vice President of the Women’s Committee of Central Park, overseeing the Playground Partners Committee.

Mrs. Jacob expresses high praise for this group of young women, the next generation of philanthropists, whom she lovingly calls “The Yummy Mommies.”

Women’s Committee President Jenny Price greeted the crowd of 500 (almost entirely comprised of young women) before a lunch of herb-crusted chicken breast quinoa toasted pumpkin seeds, kabocha squash puree, and tiramisu washed down with a Bordeaux or pinot noir.

Jenny offered special thanks to Betsy Smith and hailed her as a “fearless, strong, committed leader without whom the park would not look as good.” This was followed by Playground Partners Co-Chairs Kate Lauprete and Stephanie Stamas’s speeches.

Lydia is a highly regarded motivational speaker who has single-handedly raised over one billion dollars for more than 800 organizations, broken down countless barriers for women in the auction industry, and is the author of two best-selling books, The Most Powerful Woman in the Room is You & Claim Your Confidence.

Meanwhile, Fenet was one of countless women wearing a garden party floral frock to this event. While it was a mixed bag, this was the unofficial dress code. Many young moms seemingly dressed for an evening event with their feathers and sequins rather than something that started at 11 AM.

A few chic women opted for tailoring; naturally, there was a smattering of Chanel and Chanel-inspired outfits. One woman who always stands out in a crowd is Darice Fadeyi, MD. The subject of a subscriber’s profile I wrote last May, the great-looking dermatologist wore a maxi dress by KHAITE, an Alaia belt, and a custom jacket by Teresa Helbig, who is based in Spain.

All guests left with a gift bag provided by the two sponsors. While there were no jewels by Harry Winston there were jewel shaped chocolates. And instead of Jimmy Choo’s shoes or handbags, there were note cards and envelopes printed with images of Jimmy Choo shoes and handbags.

Jane and I were two princesses of the 60s hanging out all night at Chez Castel on 15 Rue Princess wearing the first hot pants, bras, and jumpsuits. We both had gorgeous men that we lived with for years (we were both unmarried ), and we both danced for hours chez Castel often till dawn, shaking our boobies while we “wiggled down on our men,” giggling and shaking our arms on the dance floor. We created a hot new dance, and the other hot Castel couples soon followed.

Then we invented the pile-up – called BOUM – where after shaking up and down as we fell on top of our men on the floor, and everyone followed until we had a pile of bodies a mile high wiggling in place until the song stopped. Sometimes we were 50 people, bodies filling the entire dance floor.

Chez Castel was THE private club of Europe, and to be a member, you had to be famous, not rich, just renowned. It was a great way to meet the beautiful people Delon, Belmondo, Bardot, Deneuve, and Mick Jagger before a “Bonjour.” The Beatles even performed there in a small private room in 1965, and they stayed up all night doing who knows what.

Partying with Chez Castel got so renowned that I got hired there by producer Dick Sylbert to do the costumes of « What’s New Pussycat « on the dance floor with Jane Birkin and Mia Fonssagrives as we turned all the heads with our bodies and our fashion.

Jane, who lived on 5 Rue de Verneuil, two blocks from our shop, “became one of my first clients in the shop we called MIA VICKY on 21 Rue Bonaparte (now the name of my perfume). A frequent shopper, Jane also bought the first pair of knit mini shorts when we opened in August 1968.

They were recognized by a rose embroidered on the side and were the first shorts sold in Paris. Jane also was known for wearing our navy velvet cape made to wear in the daytime in the winter over the navy knit shorts we then called hot pants. She turned heads as capes went out in the 1900s.

The biggest claim to fame of the English beauty Jane Birkin was not any movie, but was her song in 1965 with her then lover Serge Gainsbourg who wrote MOI N’EN PLUS …where they make the sounds of having sex and then an orgasm that lasts forever.

The song Serge originally wrote for Brigitte Bardot was definitely better with his English-French girlfriend, Jane, and became one of the greatest French songs in their musical history. It also created a feud between the two fabulous women, and Serge chose Jane, much to the chagrin of Bardot. Serge was no beauty (no Alain Delon), but he must have had something besides a voice.

The home of Serge and Jane became a national monument where tourists come from all over the world to sign the wall in front of the ground floor residence. Like the Beatles in London, Jane and Serge in France represented the hot sixties.

Today, Jane is most known for her Hermès Birkin bag, but to those of us Parisiennes over 75, Jane is best known for the song JE T’AIME MOI N’ON PLUS.

Last year I saw Jane in the cafe she hung out in near our market, Rue de Buci having breakfast Sunday morning. We were both in our late seventies and looking it (now without hot pants ), and we both nodded and smiled and remembered those great dancing days, chez Castel. At least I did.

She was a true Parisienne icon.

Jane had more style in her little finger than most of the Birkin toting women who are clueless about what true style really is. Those who immediately jumped on the Birkin bag connection with posts of their own Birkins, or made comments about owning many Birkins, when news of Jane’s passing was made public, are woefully missing the point.

Jane was not defined by her Birkins. They were, for Jane, durable and practical objects which she personalized and toted around with insouciance, rather than the ultimate status symbol they have become.

Quite frankly, when I think of Hermes Birkin bags, what does not instantly come to mind is the ever chic, slightly bohemian, Jane, who was gifted 4 Birkins (one at a time) and auctioned them off for charity. Rather, I envision celebrities flaunting their wealth with pictures of enormous walk in closets filled with rows and rows of Birkins in every color and exotic fabric imaginable.

Of course, Jane was most often associated with a favored $10 Portuguese straw bag which she carried year round and took everywhere (to the beach, out to dinner, shopping, etc.) in the late 60’s and early 70’s. MME.MINK was recently named “The Birkin of Basket” and Jan Haedrich (AKA MME. MINK), has an intimate connection with Jane. The two met while Jan was designing in France and she is forever inspired by Birkin’s love of simplicity. The first basket Jan designed when she launched MME MINK in 2019 was named “LadyJane”, Birkin’s nickname.

Birkin didn’t feel the need to change her bag, or outfits every day. She had nothing to prove to the paparazzi then, and she had nothing to prove to anyone as she got older. There are so many indelible images of Jane as a divine young ingénue, and so much was written about her earlier years, but what really intrigues me is the way Jane aged; “Wabi-Sabi” comes to mind.

In traditional Japanese aesthetics, Wabi-Sabi is the celebration of the passage of time and its sublime damages; the appreciation of beauty that is imperfect and transient. Instead of bowing to societal pressures and striving to hold on to her kittenish youth, Jane aged unselfconsciously with grace and confidence.

She cut her hair, went make up free, eschewed plastic surgery, and embraced a certain tomboyish chic. I love that in 2009, she told WWD, “I’d rather be dressed as a man. As soon as I’m in boys’ things I feel like I’m 12 again. I’ll go on tour in a white shirt and waistcoat.”
