The holidays are over, and spring is three months away. Fashion magic is required more than ever. Even though it’s been a mild winter thus far, we will eventually need to brace the elements in weather-ready clothing. Whether 50 degrees or 5, coats serve as a protective cocoon. They are the most essential part of your wardrobe. Why shouldn’t they also be sensational?

I am a big believer in investing in outerwear and making it the focus of the entire outfit. Your coat is the first thing, if not the only thing, most people see, especially in the cold weather. When you have a great coat or jacket, you can wear the simplest of wardrobe basics, and you are instantly pulled together.

Meanwhile, like many others, I tuned in to watch the 80th Golden Globe Awards. I thought the red carpet was a predictable parade of borrowed, expensive, unflattering frocks, a sea of drowning expectations. What’s of more interest to me is finding glamour in the everyday. The mix of glamour and practicality is hard to beat.

  1. Great piece by The Great Marilyn. I too love outerwear but am afraid we’ll need less of it in the coming years. Hope I’m wrong! Thank you Marilyn and Lookonline for consistently brilliant editorial and reporting.

  2. Ah, such a delight to encounter the bold red Norma Kamali sleeping bag coat! When I was working for Conde Nast Traveler, my coat disappeared from a busy new club in Soho — mid-80s — and how it’s missed!
This is a delightful roundup and we DO need winter coats here in San Miguel de Allende….

  3. I live in Florida now, so coats are not even an issue, but this transplanted Midwest girl misses the joy of her former coat closet. I remember my mother choosing our coats and the accompanying tams, scarves and boots each season from Jacobson’s department store. I hated it then, but the chic of it all is not lost on me now. The picture of Audrey with the fur pullover is forever my favorite!
