Dries Van Noten Gold Foil Trench
As a hedge against dollar inflation, metals (particularly gold) have recently become a hot commodity, rising to new record levels. Can this trend influence fashion? I noticed an abundance of metallic foils on some higher-end designer clothing last spring.
One notable example is the Ronas belted trench coat with metallic gold detail — a Dries Van Noten piece from a few seasons ago. Now that he is about to retire from designing his line, it is bound to become highly collectible.
Gold-foiled pinstripe blazer in gold – Dries Van Noten
If you like your gold foil in even larger doses, here’s a fabulous blazer also from Dries and it’s currently on sale. Who wouldn’t love the juxtaposition of the classic pinstripe with the over the top gold foil?
Although it looks expensive metallic foil is not just for the higher end of the fashion spectrum. Denim is also a great background for this treatment – jeans and jean jackets are a no-brainer way to show off your magpie tendencies. The shiny but classy-looking trend has trickled down to all price points and includes a bit of democratization featuring not only gold but an Olympic array of silver and also a really interesting bronze.
Call it a “gilt” y pleasure or “gilt” by association, but there is something intrinsically pleasing about seeing metallic foil embellishments on otherwise mundane articles of clothing. Of course, there are plenty of TikTok and YouTube videos demonstrating how to DIY your jeans with metallic foil if you are so inclined — for those who’d instead leave it to the design experts, here are a few eye-catching ideas both for dressing up and for every day.
SIMKHAI
If you’re looking for something for a special night out, the SIMKHAI “Brielle” foiled floral chiffon gown with corsetry’s construction could be your “knight in shining armor.” This version at Bergdorf Goodman features silver foil on a black background. It is also available in a coppery foil version on a blush background at Simkhai.com.
Lee Anderson Couture
Another dressy option is the Lee Anderson Couture knee-length, short-sleeved “origami” dress with a gold leaf pattern—a gorgeous gown version is currently on display in their Lexington Avenue store window.
Astrid Metalli Denim Tiered Skirt
Do you desire a relaxed, casual skirt? This Ulla Johnson copper-foiled Astrid Metallic Denim Tiered Dirndl fills that bill. It would look great with just about any simple tee or boho peasant blouse, or you could dress it up more with a sheer blouse.
Ganni blue foil coated Denim Midi Skirt
Ganni has this blue and gold foil-coated denim midi skirt in non-stretch organic cotton, which is more of a traditional five-pocket jean style. It could be worn just like any denim skirt but will give you a more elevated look.
Madison Maison Metallic Coated Denim Jean Jacket
Liven up your essential jean jacket in soft silver over darker denim with this Madison Maison option. It will undoubtedly make a statement with any black or white bottom of your choice. There is also a gold-over-light denim option if you are trying to lighten up a bit.
EB Denim Foil Jeans in Gold
Gold foil jeans? Yes, please! These EB Denim high-rise straight-legs can be worn day or night and styled in multiple ways. Looking for a looser silver foil style? Try EB Denim’s Frederic Foil high-rise seamed bow-leg jeans for the latest denim silhouette.
Dries Van Noten Gold Metallic Sweater
To end where we began how about some more Dries Van Noten with a gold metallic cable-knit wool sweater from the Fall ’23 runway currently on sale? It’s perfect for those cool spring and summer nights when you want to shine as bright as the stars.
