On the one hand, you have Marie Kondo advising us to “Spark Joy” by scaling down, downsizing, and then folding whatever meager possessions are left, into smaller and smaller rectangles. (Ha! The only thing we have in common is our initials (MK) lol!
Micro apartment at Carmel Place |
In New York City where the demand for housing continues to rise, micro apartments have become all the rage. A teeny tiny Upper East Side 290 square foot studio recently sold for $630,000 and more than 60,000 people have applied to Carmel Place, New York City’s first all micro unit building where the largest apartment measures 350 square feet.
North West in winter white with the Kardashian Jenner clan |
Tiny versions of the biggest stars on the planet have morphed into bona fide fashion plates and are now stealing the show (as exemplified by 2 year old North West and 4 year old Harper Beckham).
Madonna and son attend the 2014 Grammy Awards reinterpreted by Tricia Messeroux |
Photographer Tricia Messeroux has made a business out of convincingly translating red carpet moments into identical mini versions for her website, www.toddlewood.com .
On the other hand, as of late, everything seems to be on steroids.
432 Park Avenue |
Skyscrapers and apartment buildings are vying for record breaking bragging rights. 432 Park Avenue is now the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere. Topping out at 1396 feet, the 96 story building which welcomes its first residents next year, is even taller than 1 World Trade Center without the spire.
Quann Sisters |
Then there’s big (and I mean BIG) hair, as seen on celebrated street stars (and identical twins) Cipriana Quann (founder and editor in chief of www.urbanbushbabes.com) and singer songwriter TK Wonder. And in case you’re wondering, yes, it’s all theirs!
Donald Trump |
How about the legendary, overblown egos of Donald Trump and Kanye West (to name a few)?
Yeezy |
And as witnessed in the course of New York Fashion Week, which ended last Thursday, there were over scaled runway shows that were HUGE, over the top productions. Of course, I’m referring to Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 extravaganza held at Madison Square Garden. He employed approximately 1200 extras (along with supermodels Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede, and Veronica Webb) to wear his monochromatic athleisure designs, and it took place before a crowd of more than 18,000 guests (many of whom had purchased their tickets from scalpers).
Rodarte |
Chokers could not be any wider; at Rodarte they were like belts for the neck.
Marc Jacobs oversized bows, sweater, skirt |
At Marc Jacobs, platforms couldn’t be any higher and skirts, cardigans, jacket, coats, and bows took on outsized proportions.
A show goer wearing Delpozo’s enormous fringed scarf and matching sweater |
And for Delpozo’s Joseph Font, a scarf is not a scarf unless it’s body obscuring and takes the place of a coat.
