Unexpected Fashion Choices for The Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are typically shown in January. But due to the ongoing pandemic, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will air them on Sunday, February 28th. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host from opposite coasts this year. While Fey broadcasts live from The Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center in New York City, Poehler will host from the Globes’ usual location inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel. It is the duo’s fourth time hosting the Golden Globes together.

As of this moment, it remains unclear as to whether there will be a red carpet or if presenters and nominees will participate in person, remotely, or both, as they did at the Primetime Emmys last September. We know that the pre-show hosts are set to interview “some of the biggest names” according to a news release. I have to assume, and hope, that the stars will dress festively.

As the Inauguration proved, a little fashion magic is needed now more than ever. This is the time to celebrate, be bold, and break the rules. It’s less about achieving some sort of perfection and more about individuality and personal expression. With everything that is going on globally, does it really matter if you make the best (or worst) dressed list? I have my own ideas about what I would love to see. There’s nary a traditional red carpet gown in the group.

I selected 9 actresses; each one is a 2021 Golden Globe nominee with her own personal style. I show a picture of them at a past red carpet event, and then I chose what I would like to see them wear at the Golden Globes this year.

Olivia Colman is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television for her role in “The Father”. Olivia has received many accolades and awards in her career, including The Academy Award for Best Actress in 2019 for her portrayal of Anne, Queen of Great Britain in “The Favourite”. For that occasion, Olivia, who favors elegant simplicity, wore a customized green Prada dress (left). A modern choice for Sunday’s Globes would be Prada’s clutch coat in ivory and red from Spring 2021. It would suit Olivia well, down to the colorful graphic shoes (right).

Andra Day’s portrayal of Billie Holliday in “The United States vs. Billie Holliday” has earned her a Golden Globe nomination as Best Actress in a Motion Picture. The beautiful singer and actress camped it up at the 2018 Academy Awards wearing a costumey Zac Posen dress in a blue and pink floral (left). Andra has admitted she loves to add a retro flair to her attire for red carpet events and loves all things vintage. A more sophisticated and elegant idea for the Globes would be Kim Jones for Fendi’s dramatic marble printed cape dress from Fall 2021, Haute Couture. It is inspired by marbles and statuaries of ancient Rome, and I think this would suit and flatter Andra (right).

Cate Blanchett is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for her role in “Mrs. America”. Cate is the ultimate chameleon. Her personal style is legendary, and her choices are always varied and often surprising. When Cate attended the 2020 Golden Globe Awards, she opted for Mary Katranzou’s striking yellow pleated gown (left); an ode to the designer’s Grecian heritage.

For this year’s Golden Globes, I would love to see Cate go in another direction and wear Halpern’s soignee dinner suit from his Spring Summer 2021 ready-to-wear collection. FYI, Michael Halpern presented this collection last September using front-line workers as models. He also volunteered to produce PPE at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital. For his humanity, The British Fashion Council recognized Michael as a 2020 Community Honouree.

Catherine O’Hara is up for Best Performance by an Actress for her role as Moira Rose in the highly acclaimed satirical television series “Schitt’s Creek”. Catherine loves fashion and has many different and playful sides. At the 2020 Emmy Awards, when the series made history by sweeping all seven major comedy awards, Moira wore a black Valentino dress embellished with sequins. She played it down with black combat boots (left). On Sunday, I would love Catherine to take this a step further with Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli’s dramatic gold sequined maxi sheath from Fall 2021 Haute Couture. And, of course, O’Hara needs to wear those black boots with their surrealistic gold toes (right).

Nicole Kidman is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for her portrayal in “The Undoing”. On the red carpet, the award-winning actress can do no wrong. If there is one thread that pulls all her varied looks together, it’s that she loves to stand out, accent her perfectly toned 5’11″ inch frame, and make a statement. Not too many actresses could do justice to the strapless blue Armani Prive gown with the pronounced bow which Nicole wore to the 2018 Academy Awards (left). Daniel Roseberry’s bow-embellished version for Schiaparelli Fall 2021 Haute Couture Fall 2021 might look somewhat similar, but it’s far more avant-garde. After all, Armani’s dress did not have a black latex bodice (right).

Rosamund Pike is nominated as Best Actress for her role in the movie “I Care A Lot”. The British actress, who initially gained acclaim in “Gone Girl”, is beautiful, blond, tall, and is well suited for bold fashion statements, such as the alluring custom Givenchy which Rosamund wore to the 2019 Golden Globes (left). I would love to see Rosamund in Sukeina’s edgy and daring black mesh and neoprene two-piece dress with a puritanical white collar for this year’s Globes. Designer Omar Salam admits that he has an obsession with covering peoples’ necks. He finds it monastic yet very sensual. I agree.

Sarah Paulson is nominated in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series- Musical or Comedy, for her role in “The Ratched”. Paulson favors exuberant color and loves to have fun, and really stands out on the red carpet. Who could forget the fluorescent green sequin Prada she wore to the ‘Ocean’s 8’ world premiere in New York City in 2018? Or Brandon Maxwell’s voluminous two-piece dress in fuchsia, which she wore to the 2019 Oscars? (left). A good choice for Sunday would be Christopher John Rogers’ zany, playful and colorful, abstract patterned multi-tiered top and skirt from Spring 2021.

Kate Hudson is up for a Golden Globe as Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her turn in the musical fantasy drama “Music”. This is the second Golden Globe nomination for Hudson: her first was 20 years ago, in 2001, for “Almost Famous”, the film that made her totally famous. Hudson usually opts for traditionally sexy, form-fitting gowns like the white cut-out Versace she wore to the 2015 Golden Globes. I think Kate is hip, cool, and young enough to rock this Valentino ensemble from Fall 2021 Haute Couture. It’s a mix of day and evening, a little bit laid back and edgy, yet luxurious and glamorous (right).

Elle Fanning is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy for her role in “The Great”. On and off the red carpet, the 22-year-old star continues to exhibit sartorial sophistication far beyond her years. Elle wowed at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival with her homage to Dior’s New Look (left). This Chanel ensemble from Spring 2021 Haute Couture is a similar yet more casual take on the white blouse and dramatic black tulle skirt. I can see this worn with white and black cap toe Chanel Mary-Jane flats. Relaxed and comfortable, yet very dressed, I think it is well suited for the upcoming Golden Globes.
