Victor dE Souza held his fashion show at the Gansevoort Park Avenue on Wednesday September 7, 2016 at 7 PM. The show was delayed until 8:30 to allow those attending other events to view his collection. The warm evening was perfect for the congenial atmosphere of a dE Souza event and the invitation read “Believe in dE Impossible” asking the attendees to join for his “controversial runway collection.”

De Souza is a Brazilian born designer who has dressed celebrities ranging from Jennifer Lopez to Sarah Jessica Parker, and tonight’s collection was definitely controversial due to the prominence of the men who were featured in largely feminine clothing.

Victor is a highly competent designer whose meticulous attention to detail was clearly showcased with gloves, hairstyles, bags and shoes coordinated to perfection on every model.

The 49 pieces were highly intricate endeavors: each look was difficult to absorb and I found myself trying to grab another glimpse at the passing models and discovering a bow on the back of a dress or a shoe color I had not processed. Most of the footwear was shown with a stocking sock; a youthful touch that has dominated the runways for the past couple of years.

The first look featured was a black dress which lead me to believe we would be viewing an assemblage of muted attire. However, the clothing was anything but drab with yellow, pink, red, blush, purple and green used generously and effectively. Victor’s exploitation of color was unexpected: pairing pink shoes with a yellow dress; blue socks with a forest green jacket; and green shoes with a red dress.

Moreover, I loved his plastic skirts and varied colored masks-this was Lady Gaga meets Twiggy. The most astounding part of the show was his placement of men in the forefront with daring looks executed with a surprising nonchalance.

The men appeared with skirts, makeup, gloves and handbags with a casual comfort that said hey “what’s the big deal.” In fact upon reading over the run of show it was nearly impossible to determine whether an ensemble was for a man or woman.

Victor can do the conventional with ease as exhibited by his flawless black and gold embroidered pantsuit and fantastical red painted ball gown which closed the collection. But this was de Souza screaming “I am Victor hear me roar.”

As if there wasn’t enough exciting eye candy famous transsexual Amanda Lepore appeared nearly nude with a diamond G-string and strutted down the runway like a seasoned professional. Even the music by DJ Monique was ominous and subversive.

As the show concluded, Victor walked down the aisle with an ebullient smile-he had achieved “de impossible” and he knew it.
