Don’t think of it as losing a Kendall and Kylie, think of it as gaining a Savannah and Sadie. For evening wear designer Sherri Hill’s Fall 2015 show held Thursday night at the Plaza Hotel there was still much star power present in the Grand Ballroom, both on and off the runway. The two S’s are none other than Savannah Faith Chrisley of USA Network’s “Chrisley Knows Best” accompanied by her dad Michael Todd Chrisley, as well as Sadie Robertson of A & E’s “Duck Dynasty” accompanied by her mom Korie Robertson.OK, so they’re not quite Jenner/Kardashian’s but just give them some time in the big city and they’ll get there!

First of all, let me say that I was slightly unprepared for the scene I encountered in the Plaza lobby. So many millennials milling about in sky high heels and seriously sparkly party frocks at 5PM seemed slightly obscene. One particularly tall girl in a black and gold strapless cleavage enhancing mini set her crystal encrusted clutch down on the lobby center table and proceeded to knock over a huge urn filled with flowers. I must say she had extremely fast reflexes though and managed to quickly scoop it up, however not before copious amounts of water stained the oriental carpet. Carmen Dell’Orefice elegantly strolled by, white hair and white blazer flashing, and continued to make her way to the third floor ballroom. After a deep breath I decided to follow her there.

The room outside the ballroom was just starting to fill with more heavily made up and lightly dressed PYT’s (do we still use that phrase?) posing on the step and repeat including Miss USA and Miss Teen USA. I spied Rob Shuter of “Naughty But Nice;” the last time I saw him he was following Countess Luann de Lesseps around at her shopping channel clothing launch event. It turned out that he was her “walker” this evening too, as I found out when they sat together in the front row of the ballroom next to Carmen. The Countess looked stunning as always in an amazing black evening dress that definitely wasn’t from her home line nor do I think it was from Ms. Hill’s as it was suspiciously unadorned by anything clear and shiny. Across the runway, on the other front row sat 12-year-old Maddie Ziegler from “Dance Moms” recently seen accompanying and dressed like Singer Sia at the Grammy’s (she dances with Shia LaBeouf in Sia’s video and performed at the Grammy’s) with 13-year-old actress Clare Foley of “Gotham” and “Orange is the New Black.” Ziegler as Elle Magazine’s NYFW correspondent she has had one busy week See: Elle article . Nice product placement with the ELLE clutch! A few seats over I also spied Kelly Hyland, mom of Paige and Brooke, all of whom left the show last year. Carson Kressley and MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts rounded out the list of notables for the evening.

If you’re not familiar with Sherri Hill don’t be ashamed; this is niche dressing. She started her own line in 2008 after a 12-year stint at Jovani, known for prom and pageant wear. Hill gained recognition when various Miss America, Miss USA, and Miss Universe contestants won titles in gowns that she had designed. The Sherri Hill brand now has over 800 stores selling the brand in over 30 countries. She has dressed young Hollywood for the red carpet including Selena Gomez, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Bella Thorne. Her star really rose in 2011 when Kendall walked in the show during NYFW along with Miss China and Miss USA. In 2013 both Kendall and Kylie joined Miss Universe 2008 in walking the runway for the spring collection.

At about 5:40PM the ballroom went dark and the show began. Thirty-four evening wear looks were shown mostly in jewel tones and most studded with rhinestones, crystal and all matter of bling. There were velvet mermaid silhouettes, ostrich feathers, high slits, heavily beaded bodices with silk taffeta overskirts, nude illusion side panels, cut-out backs, plunging necklines, lace, jewels, beads, pearls and more crystals; sometimes all on the same dress! I realize that pageant/prom is its own market/price point and can’t be compared to some of the high-end evening wear designs I had just seen at Fashion Week however it was shocking to my system, nonetheless. Looks 34 through 44 were from the exclusive preview of the Fall 2015 Bridal Collection. The first bridal look must have been for a second wedding; it was way too sex-ay for a first, but it received cheers for its beaded fringe over a nude illusion Swarovski crystal bodice. Carmen let out a whoop for Look 42 which was the only pant ensemble; a midriff bearing lace beaded top with liquid beaded extremely form-fitting pants.

Although Carmen wore sunglasses and drank from a straw in a water bottle (aren’t straws supposed to give you wrinkles?) she was busy shielding her eyes and turning around during the show as the intense light reflecting off of the blingety-bling-bling was all just too much. I realized that the 83-year-old had to have had an extremely long day as she spent the earlier part of it posing at a presentation at the Elie Tahari show along with a stuffed zebra in the store window. Unbelievable! At the end of the show, after Ms. Hill took her quick sortie on the runway and ducked backstage, Carmen started yelling “Sherri, Sherri, Sherri” until finally she decided to take matters into her own hands (or legs) and walked briskly backstage to get the shy designer. They both embraced on the runway, everyone held their iPhones aloft, snapped and then it was over, 20 minutes after it had begun. I wonder where all the fabulously overdressed young girls went afterwards. Was there an after party at an ice cream shop?

Forget controversy over the Left Shark vs. the Right Shark, Paris’ um situation now combines left and right until they are basically one. Paris who? you might say. She couldn’t seem to get arrested as of late; although her brother apparently did just that after a flight last July; and had seemingly retreated into the ether where used up celebrities go to fade away. Or so we assumed. We had come to forget her past ubiquity circa prior to 2008 when her former bff Kim K stole her photo agency value thunder and never gave the paparazzi back. Now, it seems,

Princess Paris is seeking to reclaim her throne and an enhanced chest is her ticket to rule. It really does signal that the apocalypse is near when a one-time celebutante who claimed great pride in her modest (read: flat) chest suddenly comes torpedoing back into the public consciousness with two new weapons of mass destruction in an effort to put her firmly back in the glaring white spotlight and label her instantly “hot”. Flaunting her “breast friends” in Milan at Menswear Fashion Week, on Instagram in an open robe shot, and most recently at the Gabriel Cadenas fashion show in New York showing dangerous levels of decolletage, the question remains murky about whether they’re real or “Mammorex.”

Paris denies that she’s had anything done surgery-wise and has always claimed to like her small chest because she never had to wear a bra. When asked about the drastic change, she wisely attributes it to the “Paris Hilton Push-Up Bra” in her new line of lingerie. Excuse me but that thing must be extremely uncomfortable in order to get that amount of cleavage. Further research unearths a photo from 2009 in which she is wearing a push up bra and does look much bustier, enabling us to almost suspend disbelief. That said, I and others more well versed in this ahem area are left downright perplexed by the late January Instagram shot entitled “Glam Time” in which she sports an open robe and some substantial cleavage. It doesn’t seem possible that any bra is responsible for this shot since it would be visible and even boob tape doesn’t seem like a viable option here. There is a table full of makeup in front of her and the question of whether that was all for her face or was also used to enhance her bust line is one for the ages. TMZ even questioned their resident MUA and she cried foul.(see video) YouTube is full of videos of boob cleavage makeup done on trannys and on smaller chested women (see videos) and certainly some amount of smoke and mirrors is possible. The photo is a bit blurred out along the demarcation zone in question adding to the mystery.

Reaction on social media has been swift and merciless. Obviously many men love it while many women say that she had a much better look with her small chest. One thing is for sure: whether they came from a surgeon’s office or from an intimate apparel apparatus Bruce Springsteen’s “For You” lyrics seem fitting to describe Paris with her new boobs: “But that medal you wore on your chest always got in the way Like a little girl with a trophy so soft to buy her way.” As evidence I submit the recent photos of Paris glancing lovingly at her own chest as if to say “this was money well spent as it’s made me relevant again.” Others have commented on the possibility of an eventual unveiled disappointment if it is in fact the work of a good bra. “That would be like opening a bag of chips and finding it half filled with air.” one commented.

Of course Paris is not by any means the only one to keep us guessing. About a month ago photos of 17-year-old Kylie Jenner surfaced in which she looked surgically enhanced which we all know is quite possible in that family. Her response: “Calm down Internet…It’s just a push-up bra.” The Bombshell bra by Victoria’s Secret which increases your bust by two cup sizes, (the same one that Taylor Swift reportedly wore at the 2014 VS Fashion Show) was deemed responsible. All the Kardashian women thought Kylie looked so good that they each ordered ones for themselves according to TMZ:(see article). Kylie is also suspected of having lip implants or lip plumping injections yet she insists it is due to her lipliner application and dutiful sister Kim swears to it. Naturally, photos of the youngest Jenner without lipstick seem to confirm that more than a color cosmetic is answerable for the “punched in the kisser” fullness.

To borrow a page from the New England Patriots playbook can we please name this syndrome and promptly forget about it? How about “Inflategate”?

When history, geography, class, fashion, money and love all come together at the perfect juncture of latitude and longitude, the result is the husband and wife design team and brand called Hanley Mellon. Last night I attended a presentation of co-founding couple Nicole Hanley Mellon and Matthew Mellon’s Fall-Winter 2015 collection at Hudson Mercantile. This aspirational duo each had a background in the clothing industry before they met. She came from Intermix and Ralph Lauren, he as the ex-husband of Tamara Mellon and the Jimmy Choo brand and Harry’s of London (not to mention his pedigree as a direct descendant of the founder of Mellon Bank and that of Drexel-Burnham-Lambert). They made their design debut last September with their Spring 2015 line featuring Kenya, “a place that spoke to them” as inspiration. see video Their second collection and what I viewed last night, came by way of Antwerp.

For Hanley and Mellon everything is authentic; it was not enough to pick a place as a jumping off point, they also travel to the chosen spot and source their collection with its natives. According to their espoused ethos, “Each location is, at once, a reference for the collection and the story that surrounds it. Collaborations with local artisans are the source of unique designs that echo the traditions of each place and are featured, season to season, as periodic exclusives.” For our second season, we have infused our sportswear sensibility with new references based on our experience in Antwerp.” said Creative Director Nicole Hanley Mellon. Antwerp, known as a gateway between Europe and the New World has a culture rich in fashion particularly from the ’80s and the creative origin of the ‘Antwerp Six,’ the innovative group of designers who introduced the concept of deconstruction and graduated from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts. They include Walter van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs and Marina Yee.

The theme of the presentation incorporated the Red Star Line Shipping company which in the 1800’s transported approximately two million early settlers from Antwerp to the New World. Models posed on a “dock” against a backdrop of boat moorings with nautical rope and stanchions. Several fog machines worked overtime in the large, warehouse space trying desperately to evoke a seascape notion however they succeeded in not only making it hard to see two feet in front of your face but also you could forget about getting any decent photos. Many well dressed and well heeled guests including Mary Alice Stephenson mingled about talking, taking photos and drinking champagne in the dense and moody atmosphere.

The clothes themselves define luxury sportswear and the influence of RL’s Black Label can be sensed. Special attention is given to ease of movement and fabric hand. For instance, I asked one model if I could touch her almost metallic mohair-looking vest (another model wore the same fabric in a skirt) thinking it would be stiff and prickly. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was an extremely soft and sumptuous textile with a silky smooth feeling. There are separates in chiffon, tweed, wool crepe, cashmere, waxed leather, matte jersey as well as dresses of suede, wool crepe and satin. There are multi-layers and much versatility as some lightweight coat dresses are fully reversible and can be worn alone or over other garments. Colors range from mustard, cabernet, emerald, toast, blue moon and of course, black. I noted that shoes got a credit from Manolo Blahnik, probably the most direct competitor to Jimmy Choo however Tamara Mellon, as we all know, is no longer with Choo and has her own eponymous clothing line. There is no bad blood apparently as the former Ms. Mellon is still in their life (she and Matthew have a daughter together) and she even attended their 2010 wedding at Diane Von Furstenberg’s place in the Bahamas.

When I first became aware of this brand and the titular couple that run it, I admit that I made the obvious connection to Tory and Chris Burch back in the day. In fact, Nicole looks to be about the age that Tory was when she started her company (mid 30’s) and they both came from the RL “stable.” Matthew, 50, seems to be the older benefactor. Nicole also appears to be the brand spokesperson as she did all the interviews and claimed the spotlight while he stood in the shadows talking with friends. The similarities won’t quit: he Burches resided at the Pierre as do the Hanley Mellons with major works of art on the walls. Both travel in top-notch social circles and attend the best fetes. Speaking of that, while viewing Mathew’s Instagram (@asliceofmellon) I noticed an amazing photo that he took at the Bal des Sauvages (a masked and feathered “animalistic” soiree) to celebrate the 40th birthday of party planner extraordinaire Bronson Van Wyck which piqued my interest. (see Instagram) Vogue Magazine attended and covered the event as well and the costumes are not to believed: view slide show here.

Hopefully the similarities end there as it seems apparent that this couple worship and adore each other and collaborate so well together it would indeed be surprising if they succumbed to the same fate as the Burches. Hopefully you will not read about them suing and counter-suing each other in court over stock sales or unfair competition.

While most of us can only sit on the sidelines and wonder what it would be like to live this lifestyle, with notable friends such as Diandra Douglas, Grace Hightower DeNiro, Jason Pomeranz, Kelly Rutherford, Marie Douglas David, Mickey Boardman, Muffie Potter Aston and Vikram Chatwal (all scheduled to attend the after party at Beautique which sadly I did not make it to) however the Hanley Mellon’s seem to be taking it in stride. With two young children and a Yorkie, although they are sure to keep traveling both for their business and pleasure ventures, home is firmly based here in New York. The Hanley Mellon logo even features the subheading of 40.7 Degrees North, 74 Degrees West (the coordinates for the Big Apple) indicating that however far they roam, they are first and foremost New Yorkers.

There seems to be less of a distinction between the two with men appropriating women’s clothing and women doing the same to menswear. The transition (yes, that is the word) from male style to female is almost seamless now and will become more so in the coming years as androgyny and gender bending grow ever more commonplace. With awards going to actors who are either transgendered themselves, or who play transgendered roles on TV getting to be the norm (Laverne Cox in “Orange is the New Black,” and Jeffrey Tambor in “Transparent”); Obama mentioning the transgender community in his State of the Union speech (the first ever such mention); as well as rumors that a former triathlon winner/former Kardashian spouse may or may not be transitioning (Bruce Jenner) see cover of In Touch Magazine , this is becoming the new norm.

Along with the announcement of Frida Giannini’s replacement at Gucci: former head of accessories Alessandro Michele, who supposedly put a men’s show in Milan together in a week (Project Runway designers: listen up!) critics said they noticed a “notable aesthetic departure from Ms. Giannini’s work” which seemed “directed at a younger and more sartorially adventurous consumer.” This description may be referring to several “androgynous looks, including ruffled silk blouses, lace and cropped fur jackets” walking the runway, according to Vanessa Friedman at The New York Times.

Last season I had noticed a gradual blurring of the lines in some of the designers collections (for instance Anna Sui) who feature both male and female models on the runway. Indeed the style and articles of clothing as well as the models themselves sharing physical characteristics became almost interchangeable as if there was only one gender. Of course, I attributed this to the styles of the sexy ’70s, back in a big way for spring 2015; possibly the last time that the androgyny issue raised its unisex head. Many of the male models flirted with the David Bowie/ Mick Jagger/Marc Bolan glitter rock aesthetic. As Ray Davies of The Kinks put it “Girls will be boys and boys will be girls, it’s a mixed up muddled up shook up world.” To further illustrate that notion I just read that Anna dello Russo and Chiara Ferragni both wore items from Saint Laurent’s menswear lines to Milan Fashion Week. (link)

All of this got me thinking about something else I saw during last September’s fashion week. It was not something on the runway, but on an equally influential fashion week attendee. Standing on the Lincoln Center Plaza was a young woman in a pale pink float-y chiffon like frock. What was notable was her choice of footwear. I didn’t realize it at the time but later research showed she was wearing a pair of shoes from the Riccardo Tisci x Nike Air Force 1 collab (the white high boot limited edition); the perfect combination of hard and soft, yin and yang, masculine and feminine. I snapped a quick photo, as did many photographers, as I turned to leave, later thinking it was among the best looks I’d seen all day. It turns out that RT was a young basketballer growing up in Italy ( playing the sport from the age of 7 until he was 15 when he injured his knee) who idolized the American brand and consequently has worn white Nike Air Force 1’s with his all black everything for the past 15 years. Seeing him taking his end of the runway bow in them made Nike approach him for the collaboration. ” Being a European person, what you dream of when you think of America is all of these iconic things—the flag, which I am obsessed with, and collect personally. You have Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Nike, many things for you that are quite normal. But for an outsider, these things are so beautiful, strong, and powerful. ” he said when interviewed. He thanked Nike for actually giving him a “blank sheet of white paper” in terms of the carte blanche to design the shoes.

Tisci made three different colorways (white, black and a “band-aid” tan) of the same shoes (Low, Mid, High and Boot); each color having a separate release date (March, April and October 2014) and although he says he strove to make them accessible, around-the-block lines to purchase the shoe and its relative scarcity drove a frenzy.

After thinking about the footwear (if I dream about it enough and it’s not monumentally expensive I try to make it happen), as well as seeing various versions on my style icon Rihanna, I eventually scored a pair of the AF1 gladiator boots in white on eBay. (Incidentally, there are currently a few sizes still available in the white as well as the black boots). Mine were from a shoe store in the mid-west, selling at regular retail price. To my delight they came undisturbed and packed with literal pounds of paper stuffing all the way up the leg; the huge black & white box complete with extra black leather laces and accompanied by their original regulation mesh tote bag featuring an eagle on one side and the Statue of Liberty on the other. In urban slang, they’re “gangsta” meaning “awesome.” (see here) . The only bad thing is that they are quite time consuming to put on so, at least for me, I must commit to wearing them all day. Although there is a back zipper to theoretically enable the ease of entry, I find that it is necessary to loosen all the laces in order to accommodate my high instep, and then tighten them back up once they’re on. The good about that is I can definitely work up a sweat just getting into these bad boys; no need to actually partake in physical activity like basketball in order to burn calories.

Like anything distinctive and different they are not for everyone. Perhaps they are an acquired taste? Comments on various websites announcing their impending arrival ranged from those calling them “pro-wrestling boots” (I can see that), to posing the question “When did Nike start selling artificial limbs?” and “When’s the whole bodysuit gonna drop?” as well as the more direct but less creative “Yuck!” and “You’ve got to be kidding!”

Fear of getting them dirty is also a deterrent to wearing them, but Mr. Tisci says not to worry: “… as they get worn in and destroyed they look even better.” As for what outfit to wear them with, its true they look fine with skinny jeans but I definitely prefer the idea of teaming them with more feminine garb just to showcase their unisex vibe. (see here) Sadly, my days in a pleated schoolgirl mini are long over however I’m determined to “out them” with something femme currently “in the closet.”

It took my annual physical exam to embrace my inner “broad.” The esteemed and venerable doctor who’s been in practice as many years as I’ve been alive; the past 20 of which I’ve been his patient, knocked and entered the room. I noticed that he was in an uncharacteristically jovial mood. Trying to match his ebullience I responded to his “How are you doing?” with the saucy: “Not bad for an old broad.” More than likely this phrase tripped off my tongue as a nod to my father who, like many men of his generation, has always employed the “b” word. ” Indeed, Dad uses this exact phrase however, it’s meant to comment on a woman’s exterior physical attributes, not her health. “That’s one I haven’t heard in quite a while” was Doc’s amused retort. He asked me if I knew where the term came from and when I replied in the negative he mentioned both Damon Runyan (more on that in a minute) as well as the 1949 musical “South Pacific” where the sailors sing “…and she’s broad where a broad should be broad” in song lyrics to “There is Nothing Like A Dame.” Play video

It turns out that he was correct (whew, otherwise I would have had to find a new physician!) however I found several additional etymological attributions for the word. These include Abroadwife (a woman away from her husband or a slave) (see article) as well as a reference stemming from an early 20th century game of Three Card Monte; the object being to capture the Queen (a broad card). There is also a mention that a broad was a name for a ticket and by extension a prostitute (referring to a pimp’s meal ticket). Check out Wordorigins.org .

Of course, as my doctor mentioned the word was used as a colloquialism in a 1932 short story by author Damon Runyon when a character refers to Miss Perry as a broad, “meaning no harm whatever, for this is the way many of the boys speak of the dolls.” In 1950 this short story became the basis for the Broadway play “Guys and Dolls” further popularizing the term. Frank Sinatra was attributed with saying that “calling a girl a ‘broad’ is far less coarse than calling her a ‘dame'” and he famously remarked “I’m going to marry that broad” about Ava Gardner. Interestingly, Ms. Gardner used the word referring to herself in Ava: My Story (“Because I was promoted as a sort of a siren and played all those sexy broads, people made the mistake of thinking I was like that off the screen. They couldn’t have been more wrong.”) The image of a group of sailors or guys in a bar saying “Look at dem broads” signals the idea that a broad must be comely to attract their interest and that the men making the remarks were not of the highest social order. In my mind, the word ‘broad’ by itself is a fairly innocuous bit of slang; it’s the pairing with a modifier such as old, dumb, smart or classy which gives it a chameleon quality.

Gradually the word fell out of favor in the ’60s and ’70s and women’s libbers (now known as feminists, I suppose) were mostly responsible for seeking to remove ‘broad’ from the lexicon, along with many other alleged demeaning words such as chicks, dolls, dames, skirts and babes. This was illustrated in 1967 as the Olympic “broad jump” was renamed the “long jump” however it didn’t have any impact on the “broad reach” a sailing term. (See definition under Noun Nautical here . In “Womanwords: A Dictionary of Words About Women” by Jane Mills published in 1993, a ‘broad’ is defined as “a woman who is liberal, tolerant, unconfined, and not limited or narrow in scope.” It seems that women have recently been making an effort to take back ‘broad’ and own it as part of their own lexicon. It has come to denote a powerful, tough and ballsy woman who goes after what she wants; no shrinking violets here.

Recent examples of a ‘broad’ resurgence are plentiful. Last April, Bette Midler re-issued her 1980 autobiographical tome “A View From A Broad.” Obviously the Divine Miss M considers herself an outspoken and gutsy woman and is not afraid to announce it to the world then or now. In Brooke Shields’ recent memoir about her mother Teri Shields (“There Was A Little Girl) she recalls her mother as “a broad in the best sense of the word” and a “tough broad who could fight.” Never mind that mom Teri (the original Momager) was a raging alcoholic, Brooke wants the world to see some of her mother’s attributes (she looked great in a leopard swimsuit) as well as the impact that her mother’s hardscrabble life growing up in Newark, New Jersey had on her ability to help make young Brooke a star, albeit controversially.

The word ‘broad’ has made it into the business world as well. There is an organization called 85 Broads, formed in 1997 by CEO Janet Hanson to facilitate young female undergrads at Goldman Sachs to gain access to a wide network of female mentors in the company. The organization has 38 regional chapters around the world and 30,000 members according to its website. An organization called Broads Abroad supports solo women travelers.

I recently discovered a television show on Comedy Central entitled “Broad City” about the misadventures of two 20-something females living in New York City. Familiar terrain (or concrete) you might say considering the more well-known show “Girls,” however BC has been dubbed the “Anti-‘Girls’ and is much funnier than its predecessor according to my 21-year-old daughter. After binge watching the entire first season (don’t be too impressed — it’s only 10 half-hour episodes) on my computer, I will admit that I enjoyed it, once I got over the initial grossness and general cringe factor which seems to be inherent in today’s TV. Incidentally, I felt the same way about HBO’s “The Comeback,” yet watched that as well. (Side note: I think “Comeback” star Lisa Kudrow is a broad however her character Valerie Cherish is not).

In regard to “Broad City,” if Laverne & Shirley and Cheech & Chong somehow got together (haha that makes my head explode) the product of that union would be Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer. The two “Jewesses,” weed lovers and besties are actually portraying somewhat fictionalized versions of their younger selves in the series and using their own names. What’s also worth noting is that the show has been hailed as containing an element of that other, less popular “F” word: Feminism. This is ironic when you consider that the word ‘broad’ was originally condemned by earlier factions and as previously mentioned is an example of modern women embracing the term. The show was developed starting with shorter webisodes and expanded to a series after fellow Upright Citizens Brigade member Ms. Amy “F–King” Poehler (see website broadcitytheshow.com/#about) took an interest in supporting and producing the project as well as appearing in the season finale. Other SNL alum such as Fred Armisen, Rachel Dratch and Amy Sedaris each make an appearance on various episodes as very distinctive (read “insanely hysterical”) characters. I would definitely recommend watching the first season before January 14 when Season Two begins. Check out this great video montage to Drake’s “Started From The Bottom” which opened a “Broad City” episode. (Play video).

According to New Yorker Magazine article “ID Girls” Jacobson liked the name “Broad City” with its “sly reclamation of an old-fashioned term (“A broad is a full person,” Glazer says).” I decided that there are many ‘broads’ on television (many of the Real Housewives would qualify), comedians (of course, Joan Rivers and her replacement on “Fashion Police” Kathy Griffin are broads, as well as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Golden Globe hosts this Sunday), in films (one example of a television film was 2001’s “These Old Broads”, featuring Debbie Reynolds, Shirley MacLaine, Joan Collins and Elizabeth Taylor), in music (Barbara Streisand, Cher, Rihanna) and also as fashion designers. Just to name a few designing women who immediately come to mind: Betsey Johnson, Diane Von Furstenberg, Coco Chanel, Vivienne Westwood, Donatella Versace, Mary Quant, Katharine Hamnett, Elsa Schiaparelli and Donna Karan all pass the ‘broad’ test of being strong willed, fun-loving women.

There are, of course, broads in every walk of life, whether they want to be known as broads or not, and at every age. As for those who are no longer considered spring chickens, I intend to temper the blow of ageism by taking a quote from screen legend and noted broad Bette Davis: “If you want a thing done well get a couple of old broads to do it.”

Cara, always the trendsetter, was the first to pull on the pepperoni pizza pajama last summer. Flying home on the plane from her antic filled vacay in Ibiza along with Bradley Cooper’s main squeeze Suki Waterhouse and others Ms. Delevingne started an anti-fashion statement with her deliciously obnoxious garb. Later in the summer it was Ms. Perry who donned the questionable garment after her concert in Philly (what, no cheesesteak version?). Just when you thought the pizza onesie was so last year the former-twerker had to bring it back for 2015 and be #3 to jump on the “cheesy” trend. It looks like Patrick was a real big spender or else Miley is very hungry because he bought her the matching pizza blanket, hat and socks as well.

Any way you slice it, the pizza print seems to be the most popular of the prints just out of the box however it is not alone in the dark, or more likely at the EDM festival while being worn by a raver with a glow stick. It would seem that you can have your cake (or donut) as well as candy corn or gummy bears and wear it in onesie form, too. See other varieties here: click to article There’s also something called a morph suit which is a creepier version of a onesie (think cat burglar/second story man but with a sensory light panel that reacts to music) which is suggested male rave wear for those who favor an all-over Speedo. I am reminded of an article I just read in EW about an EDM cruise (A female voice politely announces over the PA, “Just a reminder, clothing is required in the dining areas.” click article here.
Back to the subject of males essentially in catsuits, Justin Bieber was seen holiday shopping in a London, Ontario mall wearing a loose black onesie with white stripes up the front. It was by no means the first time he’s been seen in public sporting an all-in-one garment but it is the most recent: (see photo). Likewise, Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock wore a Christmas onesie on the Christmas Eve “Live with Kelly and Michael” complete with Santa hat as he performed karaoke. (see photo here)

Even Beyonce wore a onesie from Selfridges to make snow angels on her trip last week to Iceland. In November Rihanna was seen getting off a plane in a giant DKNY sleeping bag/dress onesie. They’ve both been known to wear the occasional union suit before but so far none emblazoned with foodstuffs.

While the idea of adult onesies being worn out in public is silly enough, the fact that the sublimation printing of various treats on them is giving me an “Idiocracy” reference is a little scary. In case you’re unfamiliar with the film, it came out in 2006 to extremely limited theater release but can now be seen on cable/Netflix and has reached status as a cult film. It presents a funny yet disturbing picture as actors Luke Wilson and Maya Randolph who were medically frozen as part of an military experiment, awaken and find themselves in the ultimate dystopian society. American culture fast forwarded 500 years in the future has become an environment where intellect is sneered at and dumbing down becomes the norm; all with disastrous results. Anything green in terms of plant life, and it seems natural fibers are dead, the result of watering with a Gatorade-like substance called Brawn-do which has “electrolytes.” Mankind’s most basic instincts are pandered to, particularly anything having to do with food or sex.

TV’s most popular show on the Violence Channel is entitled “Ow, My Balls!” featuring only kicked-in-the-crotch humor and the Oscar award winning movie “Ass” is similarly self explanatory. Among corporate sponsorships which appear on everything in the film, clothing has become entirely disposable and is dispensed on rolls of polyester pajamas covered with primarily food logos. Recently many articles have been written listing how several of the horrors predicted in this movie have actually come true so the clothing angle could just be another one.

The wearing of onesies may also illustrate the fact that many celebs are primarily overindulged children and can get away with doing whatever they like. If they want to wear a onesie in their off-time knowing they will be photographed, then that is the image that they choose to project. Whether it will trickle down to the masses the way the wearing of other types of uber casual clothing has, well, let’s hope not. I’m fearful of encountering an adult teletubby on a street near me any day now. At least for the foreseeable future I believe food logos on clothing should stay on the shirts and hats worn by employees representing said food establishments. Is Dominos ready for a rebranding of their uniforms? Delivery men wearing pizza onesies may be just the thing to knock the polyester printed pies off of the celubutards backs. The wearing of pizza should be restricted to those who dish it out, not those who merely take it.

I propose: “The era of the Global Attire Apology.” Lately it seems that sartorially speaking, we are a culture of extremes that just can’t be pleased. No matter how ill advised an item of clothing or an entire outfit may be, should we be shamed into apologizing for it?

My first case in point would have to be the aptly named “Shirtstorm” brought on by one particularly clueless British physicist, Dr. Matt Taylor. This no doubt brilliant, yet tatted-up-with-sleeves-and- thigh design-of-the-Rosetta-mission, man managed to engineer the comet landing of the Philae space probe but couldn’t figure out that a bowling shirt printed with voluptuous scantily clad women toting space guns (even though it was made and gifted to him by a female friend) might send the wrong message to those on earth, particularly the increasingly verbal Gamergate and Tumblr feminists who are, shall we say, “having a moment.”

After the outcry reached a critical mass and basically overshadowed the scientific achievement, Dr. Taylor decided to make an apology on a Google hangout where he cried and called the wearing of the “offensive” shirt a “big mistake.” And what was he wearing for that appearance? He took one out of the “Mark Zuckerberg Normcore Uniform” playbook and wore what I’d like to call, the “hoodie of shame” although it had the Rosetta logo on it making it completely appropriate. See Video click here to play In an interesting twist of further “misogyny,” a similar shirt known as “Gunner Girls” with the same fabric as the objectionable one, quickly sold out online and has been placed on an eight week reorder. See website here.

Dr. Taylor has been accused of promulgating the “good old boys” network of science or STEM, however it doesn’t seem to have phased his female colleagues at the ESA (European Space Agency) who probably just know him as a quirky guy perhaps along the lines of Doc Brown in “Back To The Future,” who wore Hawaiian shirts. Otherwise it seems likely that one of these women (or even a slightly media savvy male) might have suggested he “rethink his wardrobe” especially for an important TV appearance, much like Julia Roberts as mini skirted Erin Brockovich was told to do when she joined a law firm and needed to be taken seriously. (Of course, she wasn’t having it and retorted that her boss might want to “rethink” his ties and that as long as she had “one ass instead of two” she would continue to wear what she wanted).

Urban Outfitters Kent State Sweatshirt

Other recent apologies have come from several mass market clothing chains who either employ morons or sick jokesters. Examples of these are the Urban Outfitters Kent State red tie-dyed sweatshirt which resembled a bloodied mess reminiscent of the shootings there in the ’70s and a Zara’s children’s striped shirt emblazoned with a large yellow star recalling a holocaust prisoners uniform. Both companies apologized once outed for any “unintended similarities” to that which they were compared and quickly withdrew the errant items. In an apparent attempt for a quick laugh which was supposed to be renamed before going live online, Walmart had to eat crow for featuring a line of plus-size Halloween offerings as “Fat Girl Costumes.”

Katy Perry

Then there are the “cultural appropriations,” those who don an outfit indigenous to another culture than their own ie. Katy Perry in Geisha clothing for her performance of “Unconditionally” at last year’s American Music Awards which was termed “racist.” It’s ironic that Madonna did that many decades ago and it was just called art or a tribute. Similarly, Selena Gomez took heat for wearing a sparkly bindi (a Hindu religious ornament) during a performance of “Come and Get It” during the MTV Movie Awards, also last year. To my knowledge, neither of these performers ever addressed the backlash and I don’t think they should as it seems clear that these performances were both beautiful and done in a spirit of honoring the cultures that they were accused of “appropriating.” Is it too farfetched to think that a woman wearing a fabric with an animal print will soon be accused of “species appropriation”?

I suggest that the logical conclusion is that we all start apologizing for everything we’ve ever worn that could be construed as offensive, off-color, insensitive, tacky or just butt-ugly. I’m sure that there are plenty of bad prom dresses, leisure suits, bell bottoms, “obscene” fish ties–hell, how about any of the fashions from the entire ’80s, that we should be doing penance for. A friendly reminder: brace yourselves for those soon-to-be trotted out abysmal yet campy, hideously ugly Christmas sweaters that someone should be atoning for.

Roselyn Sanchez

On the other hand, I wonder what it says about those who leave off an article of clothing particularly undergarments, as well as donning entirely sheer dresses (Rihanna at the CFDA Awards, Roselyn Sanchez at the Latin Grammys, Kim Kardashian just about every day) that they never feel contrite. This is the last offshoot of the “wardrobe malfunction” as demonstrated by Janet Jackson who may or may not have meant to expose her breast to the entire Super Bowl audience, thereby coining the term and the 5 second broadcasting delay (which will most likely be deployed during Iggy Azalea and J-Lo’s “Booty” performance this Sunday at the AMA’s).

J.Lo and Iggy Azalea

Once we went down that slippery slope it seems not a day goes by that some actress/singer can’t keep her breasts under wraps or her privates private. They are allowed to show or celebrate the female form whereas it’s termed as sexism if a man does it. The fact that they are unrepentant attention whores certainly gets the “haters gonna hate” juices flowing and inspires yet a different type of ire. Where’s that spare hoodie when you need it?

It’s the coldest night of the season so far and I’m fighting off sinusitis and a twitching left eye. I’m also in a cab ($30 fare) on my way to the Reserved Magazine 2nd edition release party, ready to mingle with the beautiful people at Paul’s Baby Grand (owned by Paul Paul Sevigny) in the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Figuring I would never make it past the discriminating doorman on an actual club night (waaay too old, not a size 0, blah-blah-blah you do the math) tonight is my chance to glimpse the netherworld of downtown after dark. I’m in full regalia–basic black (leather) with skulls (crystal Butler & Wilson choker, earrings) so let’s do this. Courtesy of the young PR girls freezing their buns off whilst checking names and I’m in! “What a feeling (I can really have it all)…”

Past the red velvet curtains and down the stairs lies the small eclectic, Miami beach meets Victoriana space complete with palm fronds. The room is filled beyond capacity and yet the party is in its infancy. I make a quick circuit while I still can move, noting the “hostess of the evening” and Reserved cover model Helena Christensen chilling on a banquette with a female friend. She looks lovely at 45; it is indeed hard to believe that she is from the dawn of the ’90s supermodels, along with Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington, who ruled the pack back in the day. When I try to take her photo beside official photog Patrick McMullan’s son, an angry woman in an orangey red jacket appears. “Who are you with?” she demands. “We have our photographer already. Please don’t bother her (indicating Ms. Christensen). I just want her to relax.” Oookay…but a) as a model I’m sure she’s used to having her photo taken and b) this is a press party…you invited me and ostensibly you would like the coverage and photos are a large part of that, no? I take a few random shots of the crowd and another minion is upon me, this time a smaller yet imperious chap. “No flash allowed!” he says despite the fact that I witness flashes going off all around me. What is this, a museum? It’s so dark that nothing will come out without a flash. I am told once more that I can’t use my camera but obviously I’m not playing by the rules tonight.

The crowd is a mixed bag of those primarily in their 30’s and 40’s, models, modelizers, those who remember the golden days of clubbing (Tunnel, Limelight, maybe Studio 54)and look worse the wear for it, as well as a Brooklyn version of Paul Bunyon, hopefully without his axe. Mitja Bokun, the editor-in-chief of Reserved is holding court near the bar. DJ Mick Rock is jamming an eclectic mix of mostly older/classic hits and some remixes while the thick air reeks of cigarettes and weed making me cough. I stake out a standing space, semi out of the way of the drink waiter’s path and am alternately taking in the scene/fighting the urge to GTFO and hop right back into another $30 taxi.

As I’m standing there trying to decide what to do other than loom awkwardly, a woman who reminds me of a silent film star but with an eastern European accent which I’m having trouble decoding in the din approaches. “I don’t know you, but I feel you” she begins and proceeds to nuzzle my neck. “I love that perfume. What is it?” Her blonde friend looks on slightly bemused. I just nod and try to look nonchalant. “Please go sit over there with us” she nods slightly to a space in the middle of the section of banquettes. “We will be back.” I blink and try to regroup as they walk off to the bar or ladies, thankfully never to be seen again. I come to perch on an empty banquette lining the wall across from the bar, in relatively easy reach of the exit and people watch undetected for a while. I guy comes in with a bowl cut black wig and full length sable coat accompanied by a stylish woman in a black and white striped fur jacket and sparkly pants. He turns repeatedly, winks and waves at me. I smile back. A couple comes in bearing huge Kurt Cobain books. I guess there was some sort of ’90s retrospective going on from whence they came.

A young Geoffrey Holder type perches next to me at the adjoining table and I shift slightly so as not to be in his way. “You don’t need to move. I’ve got room” he says with a twinkle in his eye. We talk…it seems that he is quite the nightlife king and has skipped Diddy’s taping of the Global Swing DJ’s Awards to be aired next month, in favor of this event. “Since it’s just a taping who knows if there’d be drinks or food?” he reasoned. He tells me he was “checking me out” and apparently it is not a bad thing to resemble a cross between Liza Minelli (I’ve heard that before), either Shirley of “Laverne and Shirley” or Joyce DeWitt of “Three’s Company” (it was unclear which TV show reference he meant) and a school teacher (I was wearing my glasses). In an aha moment I suddenly remember my eye twitch…maybe everyone thinks I’m winking at them?!? The urge to bolt finally wins out and I flee into the cold air and thankfully, my getaway car aka a warm taxi that’s dropping more people off at the party.

Reserved Magazine was originally launched on Indiegogo in 2013, raising just $1,650 of its $15k goal. It is the brainchild of Vanity Fair’s Photo Producer Richard Villani, and currently lists Whitney Mercurio and Mitja Bokun as Co-editors in chief. The first edition, out last year, billed itself as “The Magazine for Some People.” The press release for this edition claims “We dig people with a lot of bandwidth. Our aim is to disseminate quality content on visual arts, film, fashion, photography, music, writing, design and anything and everything else that we and our readers fancy, that’s just the baseline. We don’t comply with any specific standard or format. Our kryptonite is boredom. We stand alert, scanning the horizon for creatives looking to contribute and share their work, be it visual, literary, gastronomical, musical or whatever. But it better be interesting!” See edition here.

Lycra, latex and neoprene…this trio may have replaced cotton as the fabrics of our lives. Throw in a little nylon, a shot of polyester and perhaps some rayon, and voila! You’ve got the current craze of “athletic streetwear” for lack of a better name (more about the moniker in a bit). The latest iteration on this phenomenon is the November 6 sale of Alexander Wang x H&M collection, a quasi “bondage meets logoed frogman-inspired effort” which failed to deliver the goods on its endless pre-nascent hype. Refinery 29 is one website that couldn’t contain enthusiasm: referring to Wang they wrote “The designer took his nighttime-sports inspiration to heart; crafting an après-gym array just right for the Saturday-night circuit.” Of course, a few items such as backpacks, boxer gloves, over-the-knee socks, a jacket and a pullover sold out, however the bulk of the collection was still available in a wide range of sizes on the H&M website (I did a peremptory check) a full day after the mass frenzy; unheard of in some of the Swedish retailer’s past collaborations.

We already have myriad incarnations of this “beyond-the-gym-wear” as just about every high-end designer from Marc Jacobs to Karl Lagerfeld, from DKNY, (someone’s got to give that poor out-of-work destitute model Cara Delevingne a job… HA) to Adidas by Stella McCartney has tried their hand at it. There are plenty more including Pharrell x Adidas, Nike x Pedro Lourenco, Net- A -Sporter, Cynthia Rowley, Betsey Johnson, Norma Kamali…the list is fairly exhaustive not to mention brands like Athleta, Lululemon and the UK’s Sweaty Betty. Topshop has recently announced that Beyonce will debut a line of activewear or “whatever you want to call it” for them, just to round out the mix. I was recently at a grand opening party for a townhouse boutique next to Lord & Taylor known as Bene Rialto (“Good marketplace” in Italian) which featured a line of working out/ hanging out attire with the name Alala.

Am I the only one who thinks that this is getting ridiculous? Are we really a nation of women who go to the gym (or want to look like we go) and never make it back to our closets to change? Can we really tweak a little here and a little there as Kamali Active would have us believe; a quick change from leggings to a lycra skirt and presto! chango! ready for the office-o? Is this just the next evolution on a wardrobe of sweats or a not-quite-ready-for-the-jet-pack uniform a la Jetsons 2.0? I don’t expect to see anyone at a board meeting “sporting” the “just came from the gym and didn’t have time to change but it’s alright” attire anytime soon, or at least, I hope not. I thought that the Wang/H&M collection was downright silly and I’m glad to be mostly proven right by less than stellar sales.

There’s another aspect of this type of attire which I had not really thought about; the close relationship to what a “rubber friendly” website terms: “fetishwear.” I had definitely not had that “lifestyle” in mind when I ordered a piece of the Spring 2013 Oscar de la Renta collection from The Outnet. A red pencil skirt which was termed “rubberized” turned out to be a full-on latex bathing cap of an item–no lining or anything, which static clings unattractively to the thighs, even on the runway models. Anna Wintour’s expression is priceless in a still shot from the show as the skanky skirt retreats, albeit teamed with an uber conservative black peplumed “Ladies who lunch” jacket and flowered brooch. She was later quoted as saying that she loved the collection which was replete with several other latex pieces (a top, a dress) as well as pink streaked beehived models.. I know the late great de la Renta can do no wrong; which is basically why I even ordered the skirt in the first place; but upon seeing it “in the flesh” I got the strong vibe that this is what the “discerning rubberist, fetishist or alternative clubwear afficionado” would clad themselves in for reasons that have nothing to do with Ebola protection.

Back to the problem of an appropriate sounding name for the activewear category in general. Vanessa Friedman of The New York Times recently wrote about just this very subject (she must have read my mind!) and offered readers a chance to sound off with some suggestions. (click here to read column) Thinking it might be fun, I offered a few, some of which were not deemed Times-worthy. The ones that made it into the mix were: AthTechLeisure or ATL( with apologies to Hotlanta), then I got really “acronym happy.” I proposed the following: NOGO (Not Only Gym Outfit), TOGO (Town or Country Outfit), GOTO (Gym Outfit Today Only) or, my personal fave TETSI (Too Expensive To Sweat In). My dual suggestion of NFGO (Not For Gym Only)was coupled with the cheeky NFGW (Not F…ing Gym Wear),which was apparently censored; totally understandable for the Grey Lady. Other readers made suggestions like Pret-A-Jogger (cute) or Ready-To-Run (sounds like stockings) as well as Everywear which I had thought of and discarded for being too pedantic. No final ruling was made, to my knowledge, on what name was finally chosen so we are left to wonder.

In a parallel mass retailer universe, I’ve been eagle eying Banana Republic and what impact their new designer Marissa Webb will have. What I’ve noticed so far besides a subtle “J. Crew-ification,” is the advance celebrity hoopla over a particularly covetable item: a faux shearling or sherpa-type jacket which has appeared with alarming perpetuity around the inter web. Kate Bosworth was photographed wearing the white with black piping 3/4 length coat last month and since then there have been umpteen permutations of “Get Kate’s Style” or even her actual outerwear. In a “celebs are just like us” twist, many websites are touting the fact that this jacket is an affordable $225 at Banana Republic–before showing off other “dupes,” some at escalating price points. I called and visited my neighborhood BR last week which was when the coat was supposedly available. Not only did no one in customer service online have a clue but they mostly suggested that this was just a one-off made for the actress and probably wouldn’t be produced at all. When I indicated to a store associate that it was part of the holiday collection they told me to expect it “the Monday before Thanksgiving.” Meanwhile another of the “chatty” websites said it would be in stores only, further heightening the suspense. Just like in “The Sopranos,” the disinformation works like virtual catnip to our cyber feline.

There’s nothing like the pre-exposure of an impending item or collection to make customers scramble; the manufactured exclusivity, rarity and celebrity cachet make it the object of desire, whether one really has use for it or not. I would say that the AW/HM collection perhaps fell short of this goal. After all, it’s a good deal harder to create a demand for, say a “scuba-inspired” rubber-like outfit even one emblazoned in WANG, than it is for a soft, cozy jacket, especially with the cold winds of winter beginning to make their presence felt.
