Sarah Jessica Parker, dressed in a Giles Deacon graffiti printed gown, Christian Louboutin plaid over the knee boots, and a Philip Treacy Mohawk head-dress, she managed to touch upon almost all the punk themes. Was it a bit over the top? Yup. But she can get away with anything, and it actually suited her. She also looked great on the arms of Vogue’s dandy, Hamish Bowles, wearing a tuxedo whose lapels were decorated with spiky silver hardware.
Miley Cyrus in a long narrow Marc Jacobs black fishnet gown, which she accessorized with her platinum spiky hair. It did not look like a costume on her, as this is the way she has been dressing as of late.
Gisele Bundchen in Anthony Vaccarello’s abbreviated black dress with silver chains. She rocked it and there are not too many women who could pull this off effortlessly.
Carey Mulligan in Alexander Wang for Balenciaga (from his fall 2013 collection). The sculptural black dress with a touch of silver hardware (with a wink to punk) was minimal, chic, and modern.
Stacy Keibler (George Clooney’s gal pal) definitely has the perfect stature and body to carry this custom Rachel Roy studded and sheer black mini dress with long sleeves.
Linda Fargo: What can you say about Bergdorf’s highly visual fashion honcho, who admits that she “loves a good theme”? Did someone say she actually put barbed silver wire in her hair?
Donatella Versace and Zandra Rhodes: Both dressed in their own designs, and they both ‘own’ the look after all, no?
Tommy and Dee Hilfiger: In matching customized Tommy Hilfiger tartan plaid ensembles: Cute! (And they looked like they were having fun)
Vera Wang opted for a long body revealing version of her own design.
Alexa Chung: Wearing a beautiful, short, black, Erdem dress (with a spider web effect), Alexa looked like herself but also gave a nod to the theme of the night.
Carine Roitfeld is another one that always gets it right and she nailed it with her Givenchy fall 2013 ensemble.
By the way, I loved that the queen of punk, Vivienne Westwood, was wearing something completely un related to Punk, as though she was completely above it all (and she is).
Who got it wrong, or just didn’t get it? (whether on purpose or not):
Madonna: I could not believe my eyes when I saw her picture….she took it too literally and looked like a caricature of herself regardless of the fact that it was Givenchy Haute Couture.
Kate Upton admitted to style.com, “I don’t think I fully understood the theme,” and from the look of her rather plain green DVF gown, that was obvious! (fyi, is it me, or did that dress look a bit like a swimsuit cover-up? Considering that fact she has just graced the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, maybe that should not come as such a surprise).
Gwyneth Paltrow looked like a Good Humor pop-sickle (or is it a cream-sickle) in her pink Valentino
Marc Jacobs and Sofia Coppola both looked as though they stumbled into the Met by accident LOL. Why am I not surprised that Marc and his BFF looked about as un punky as could be? Do you really think Marc wants to look like anyone else? Of course not. He wants to stand out and make his own statement and he did so with his choice of a Comme des Garcons suit covered in polka dots (worn with a shirt with prim white collar and black bow). He dressed Sofia in a loose and comfy pajama (his favorite ensemble as of late).

I know Beyoncé is a true Diva, but really, does she always have to have the LONGEST train on the planet?
Kim Kardashian and
Kanye West both opted for custom Givenchy. Her choice of a completely covered up dress (okay, it did have a high slit) in a wallpaper floral print no less (rather un Punk), was a nice surprise. Hey, it could have been a lot worse. Just think, she might have taken the theme to heart and decorated her pregnant belly with studs or safety pins for all the world to see.

Speaking of floral prints….in my blog on Sunday, I joked that if you wanted to really look rebellious and shocking at the Met ball, you might consider wearing a a Lilly Pulitzer floral frock (the most un-punky thing I could think of). Looking at pictures of Anna Wintour, all I could think of is that she took my suggestion to heart (Ha!), though in her case, naturally she would opt for Chanel Haute couture). There IS a way to wear a floral prints, and give it an edge. This was exemplified by Thom Browne, whose date wore his rose printed gown with gold spikes on the shoulder.
