New York City is often described as a “concrete jungle,” a term popularized through film, music, and literature to convey a landscape dominated by buildings and infrastructure, with limited natural greenery.

The NYBG’s current theme for the 23rd annual Orchid Show explores this idea with the mysterious, gas-masked, allegedly worn for allergy defense but never seen without it, celebrated street artist/designer Mr. Flower Fantastic (MFF) in the exhibition on view now through April 26.

Thursday night featured the annual Orchid Dinner at the Plaza Hotel, an event that transforms the venue into a vibrant oasis where both plants and guests showcase their creativity.

In the Bronx, visitors can view life-size floral tableaus representing city life, including a brownstone, subway, trash can, dumpster, car wash with a floral taxi, laundromat with terrariums, pizzeria with a floral pepperoni pizza, and a newsstand, all presented as works of art.

In Midtown Manhattan, many tablescapes reflected and expanded on this theme, featuring elements such as a decorated water tower, city skyline motifs, a graffiti-covered construction column, an NYBG subway sign, a Tiffany & Co. tribute with blue shopping bags, and illuminated butterflies reminiscent of Times Square. The event offered a vibrant visual experience.

All 41 centerpieces were curated and donated by local floral designers and companies. Each designer was provided with a complete table setting to showcase their creativity, resulting in unique and imaginative displays.

Unlike previous years, the floral designers were not present at their tables, limiting opportunities for interaction. Mr. Flower Fantastic was also absent. The evening was sponsored by Emily P. Wheeler, Veranda, and Hearst, with jewelry by Wheeler displayed throughout the venue.

Guests included Alex Newell, Emily Wheeler, Martha Stewart, Plant Kween, Anne V., and others. Lead Chairs Susan and George Matelich. Guests also contributed to the event’s vibrant atmosphere, wearing festive attire that included floral patterns, bright colors, white, pastels, sequins, and beads. The emphasis was on bold, eye-catching fashion.

At the cocktail hour and rare orchid sale, the orchids sold out quickly. Initially, I was the only guest wearing floral headwear, but as the evening continued, more women appeared with similar headpieces, some crafted from live flowers.

The ever-exotic orchid seems to be having a moment, as witnessed at the Paris Haute Couture Dior show – designer JW Anderson festooned several models with orchids cascading down their necks and shoulders.  Orchids as fashion accessories will always be iconic, much like the daily trademarks that make NYC “the place dreams are made of.”

“When I’m wearing a new bonnet, all the figures I ever knew go right slap out of my head,” to quote Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind. No one was doing much math yesterday, except for tallying up the $4.3 million raised for the upkeep and improvement of Central Park.

This annual event, presented by the Women’s Committee of the Central Park Conservancy, was sponsored by Harry Winston, Inc., JP Morgan Chase, and Oscar de la Renta (who had a very popular dress represented here, which I spied on multiple women).

The weather gods smiled on us with a perfect day, which meant all the ladies turned out in their finest (and sunniest) fits while millinery was top of mind and head. Derby season and hat luncheons, which are now turning up in various parts of the country, account for much of the springtime interest in headgear.

Hats from Suzanne Couture and Kokin are always popular choices, but anything goes and can be found on sites like Etsy (which is where I found mine). And no, it came from the UK, not China, before the tariffs.

Attendees included Mayor Bloomberg (whom some lamented they wanted back), Martha Stewart, Fe Fendi, Alexandra Liebenthal (who wore a black cocktail hat from the William J. Bill Cunningham collection at auction), Jamee Gregory, Sharon Jacob, Jean Shafiroff, Gillian Miniter, Muffie Potter Aston, and a black-clad and hatted Scarlett Johansson.

There were the more traditional floral, bowed, feathered, frilled, or sculptural hats, and some that could be called more novelty. I spotted a merry-go-round carousel, a woman with rose-filled wine glasses perched atop her head, various swans (but no Flaco owls like last year), multiple clusters of butterflies, an intricate gold pagoda, a model of Central Park, a bedazzled ice-cream cone, giant cherries, apples, who knows what other foodstuffs and the list goes on. Oh, and a duck’s ass if you can believe that one accompanied by a dress printed with all the ducks in a row.

This is my fourth year at this event, and I can say that the beautiful Central Park reservoir site puts everyone in a good mood. People are smiling, friendly, and just happy to be out in the sunshine, taking photos with large groups of others they may or may not be acquainted with, just because their outfits match or they like what someone else is wearing – that kind of energy.

Of the approximately 1,400 people, nearly all were women, and most wore color, but there were a few outliers in all black and even a woman covered in black turkey feathers literally from head to toe. Since the weather is so changeable this time of year here in NYC, I often wonder if some women have alternate outfits planned in case of hell or high water, similar to what we had here earlier in the week.

After the cocktail hour spread past the luncheon tent to the garden fountain, a Primavera salad of roasted chicken and vegetables was served, followed by a meringue tart accompanied by rose or Chardonnay. President of the Women’s Committee Tracey Huff presented the Frederick Law Olmstead Award to Jenny Price, Former Women’s Committee president from 2022-2024.

The New York Academy of Art celebrated their 2025 Tribeca Ball on Tuesday, April 15, sponsored by Van Cleef & Arpels. Considered the ‘best art deal in town’, this is a rare backstage pass to meet artists in their studios and a unique opportunity to support the school that Andy Warhol founded.

The event is easily one of spring’s most animated, eclectic, and joyful parties—an art opening, a cocktail party, and a ball all rolled into one. For one night only, the New York Academy of Art, located at 111 Franklin Street, opened its doors to showcase the next generation of art stars.

Every building room is used—it is over five stories with more than 100 artist studios. Offices are turned into model dressing rooms, the printshop becomes a performance space, and guests wind their way through the entire labyrinth.

The evening was a vibrant mix of experiences, with three full bars, interactive installations, a variety of entertainment (including vibraphone and brass duos), stilt walkers, tarot card readings, contortionists, a Build-a-Bouquet booth, custom printmaking, an electronica lounge, and countless photo opportunities.

The evening focuses on art and the talented students who offer a first-hand look at their process, molding clay or applying the final touches of paint. This is a rare chance for their work to be viewed by many high-profile artists, collectors, actors, and tastemakers from all over New York in attendance.

Among the guests were Eileen Guggenheim, PhD, Chair of the Academy of Art Board of Trustees; board members Sharon Jacob and artist Eric Fischel; Brooke Shields, Liev Schreiber, Annette Roque, Joseph Altuzarra; Helene Christensen; Carol Alt; Gina Gershon, Carla Shen; Polina Proshkina; Alexander Hankin; and Dustin Yellin.

Yellin, a Brooklyn-based artist and well-respected fixture on the art scene, told me he always purchases something from this show to support new talent. This year, he is especially interested in the work of fellow Brooklyn-based artist Thomas Sternglass.

This year’s event honored David Kratz, named President of the New York Academy of Art in December 2009. There, he oversaw the training of 100 students each year. Kratz, who announced his retirement in December, is a painter who lives and works in New York City. He works primarily in oils and focuses on figurative art.

Kratz is unique in the history of the school’s leadership in that he also graduated from the Academy in 2008. Eileen Guggenheim, Eric Fischl, and Peter Drake bestowed David’s award upon him during a resplendent sit-down dinner of artichoke tarte tatin, black cod, and dark chocolate cake held on the first floor of 111 Franklin Street.

I was Sharon Jacob’s guest, who was there with two of her daughters, Stella and Cecilia. Through her philanthropic work, Sharon personifies the idea that “to whom much is given, much is required.”

The dinner, which ended with a highly spirited auction that quickly raised over $75,000, was also a perfect opportunity to announce the launch of the David Kratz International Center.

The Center’s mission is to bring the Academy’s unique educational offerings and opportunities to aspiring artists worldwide and to develop an international network of like-minded institutions and artists. This initiative, named after David, is a testament to his dedication and contribution to the art community.

Trompe l’oeil, which literally translates to “fool the eye,” is the art of creating the illusion of a third dimension. It is meant to describe something that appears to have detailing, such as a belt, a tie, a pocket, or a complete garment, but is actually just drawn on, knitted in, or printed on.

Though it originated as a painting technique in Greece and Rome and has been used decoratively in home furnishings throughout the ages, it has also been applied to clothing and accessories.

The sporty and graphic trompe l’oeil sweaters Elsa Schiaparelli created in the 1920s, including the Bowknot sweater, considered the most famous woman’s sweater of all time, launched Elsa’s career.

As someone who came of age in the 1960s and 1970s and is a vintage aficionado, I have long appreciated Roberta de Camerino’s iconic and signature trompe l’oeil handbags, which graced the arms of Princess Grace and Maria Callas and were adored by Dali, and her signature dresses made of stretch jersey.

Many of the one-piece dresses, which are collector’s items, often include what looks like a separate shirt, tie, vest, belt, jacket, coat, and skirt. So witty and so convenient. Who has not left a cardigan in a restaurant or somewhere else? No chance of that when wearing a Roberta di Camerino, or a Thom Browne, for that matter.

There is no contemporary designer associated with trompe l’oeil as Thom Browne. It’s a recurring theme and mainstay throughout his collections. Given that we are all so strapped for time, how modern is it to wear what appears to be several layers, but getting dressed takes one quick gesture?

For decades, expressive trompe l’oeil prints have been a Moschino and Jean Paul Gaultier signature. On Thursday, September 22nd, 2022, guests gathered at the Park Avenue home of Jean and Martin Shafiroff to celebrate Jean’s being named Gilded Gala honoree for the French Heritage Gala’s upcoming celebration at the Union Club in New York on November 17th. The Paris shindig on October 15th will honor the Lauder family, Ann and William Van Ness, Elizabeth Segerstrom, and Barbara Tober at the Petit Palais.

This 40th Anniversary blowout will feature a delectable dinner by four-starred Michelin chef Eric Frechon and illustrious guests Ambassador Philippe Etienne and Ambassador Denise Campbell for the paltry price of $1000. I still don’t fully comprehend what the French Heritage Society does, but it sounds official.

Its website says it has given over 600 restoration grants to properties throughout France and the United States and even raised $2.6 million for the Notre Dame Restoration Fund to help rebuild after the April 2019 fire. So it’s something to do with architecture and future generations.

They have also sponsored more than 500 students from prestigious universities who have studied abroad for internships. The gala in Paris is black tie long gowns, and anyone planning casual chic should return to the US. The Anniversary tour is currently sold out, but tickets to the gala still exist, and I encourage all the Madames and Monsieurs to act quickly.

Tonight in New York was reminiscent of pre-covid times when guests gathered at Jean and Martin’s home for monthly cocktails and photos. In a resplendent yellow cocktail dress by Oscar de la Renta, Jean exhorted guests to have a ball while acknowledging Francophile Elizabeth Stribling and CeCe Black are pivotal figures in the organization.

Jean received an honorary citation from State Assemblywoman Rebecca Seawright, who noted Jean’s preeminence on the society and philanthropy circuit in New York, Palm Beach, and the Hamptons. Some familiar faces were in the crowd, including legendary hostess Susan Gutfreund. She arrived with her dog and was lamenting the heavy traffic that prevented her from attending the previous evening’s Lang Lang gala.

Famous Broadway producers Bonnie and Stewart Lane, Wendy Federman, Lady Liliana Cavendish, socialites Janna Bullock and Couri Hay, Ruth Miller and Jacques Acoca, Justin Franks and Jonathan LeWinter, Lucia Hwong Gordon, Candace Bushnell of Sex and the City, and designer Victor de Souza. Victor designs many of Jean’s magnanimous dresses, but tonight he was the fashion star in a vintage Balenciaga getup that outdid any so-called “street style star.”

After a two-year hiatus, the New York gala season is in full swing as the upcoming week will host the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, and Carnegie Hall galas, where much of the same 600-person crowd will shell out $2,500 to enjoy the unparalleled social and cultural season that the Big Apple offers.

It’s hard to fathom that less than a year ago, guests were confined to their homes to avert a life-threatening pandemic as the word covid has slowly receded from the casual conversation of partygoers. Whether attendees appreciate the ability to hug and kiss without gloves and masks remains to be seen.

Still, I am hopeful New Yorkers will dance and drink with abandon for an exciting two months in the City that barely sleeps.
