Yesterday, I attended Fashion Group International’s (www.fgi.org) 17th annual Rising Star Awards, and once again, the sold out event, which honors 17 outstanding individuals in 8 different fields, was held at Cipriani 42nd Street. I could think of worse ways to spend a frigid early afternoon in January, than by enjoying a wonderful meal of prosciutto and pear salad, Chilean Sea Bass, strawberries and chocolate mousse, (and enough spirits to warm anyone’s frozen body), in the company of my fellow ‘fashionphiles’, many of whom I’ve known for decades. All for the purpose of celebrating the “extraordinary accomplishments of emerging talents” whose creativity and vision are realized in the following categories: Accessories, Home/Interior Design, Beauty Corporate, Beauty Entrepreneur; Fine Jewelry, Men’s Apparel, Women’s Apparel, Retail, and Business Innovation.

And of course, getting a few laughs courtesy Simon Doonan, the outrageously funny Master of Ceremonies, doesn’t hurt. He is so humorous; many in the crowd (including Simon himself) started laughing before he even uttered 10 words. He started out by reminding everyone that he’s “been around since the Middle Ages” (he described himself as a “gay male version of Dame Maggie Smith’s character in Downton Abbey”) and therefore he felt obliged to share some of his wisdom with the relative ‘newbies’ being honored. He had 7 pointers which he proceeded to deadpan:

#1- “Have at least one drag queen in your orbit”.

#2- “You will have to travel as you become more and more successful. Always leave a huge tip for the chamber maid- or else your rising star will plummet quickly!”

#3- “Make sure your star is on a dimmer so you can adjust it (this way you won’t blind us with your fabulousness!)”

#4- “Always keep a jar of pickles in the fridge. I always do and don’t know why, but I’m afraid to find out what would happen if I don’t”.

#5- “Don’t give away your frocks to celebrities. They can easily afford to buy them. In fact, you should over charge them 10% (think of it as a celebrity sur charge)”.

#6 – “Don’t take from your parents’ 401K, this could lead to horrible consequences” which he began to innumerate.

#7- “Always remember that fashion is fun. Don’t become neurotic. Enjoy your creative odyssey”.

Then it was time for the awards…

Lincoln Moore was the presenter in the Accessories category. Nominees were Neil Blumenthal and David Gilboa for Warby Parker; Edmundo Castillo for Edmundo Castillo; Annie Jaroszewicz for Equipt For Play; Melanie Lopez for Roman & Sunstone; Deborah Sawaf for Thale Blanc; Annette and Phoebe Stephens for Anndra Neen; Michelle Vale for Michelle Vale. The winners were a tie between Neil Blumenthal and David Gilboa, and Edmundo Castillo who noted “We all work in a challenging industry that is also a lot of fun. It’s great to create beautiful things.”

The very animated designer Steven Stolman presented in the Home/Interior Design category. He told the crowd that the last time he attended a Fashion Group event was 30 years ago. When he was working for a large dress company on 7th Avenue (which he jokingly referred to as “Hideous Originals by Despicable Me”), he was asked to fill in for someone at the last moment, and found himself surrounded by about 1000 other people, including design icons Bill Blass, Geoffrey Beene, and Pauline Trigere. “Silly me, I thought I was one of them, and that I belonged” he joked. “I was honored to have been invited back by FGI”. He presented the award to Anna Karlin of Anna Karlin (“I have been in business for one year and what a year it’s been!” she stated). The other nominees were Jon Call, Mr. Call Designs, and Reinaldo Leandro and Ariel Ashe of Ashe & Leandro.

Leslie Blodgett presented in the Beauty/Fragrance Entrepreneur category. The winners were husband and wife team Tony Perez and Meredith Waga of Belle Fleur (they announced that they met when they were 6 years old). “Wow!” exclaimed Meredith. “I know it’s not very eloquent, but Wow!”, she exclaimed. “Our daughters taught us how to communicate in this incredible language of scent”, Tony chimed in.

Other nominees in that category were Kelly Jones, Kelly & Jones; Claude Morais and Brian Wolk of Ruffian Beauty; and Nathan Motylinski of Le Cherche Midi.

Kara Ross presented Margery Hirschey of Margery Hirschey the award in the Fine Jewelry category (“This is terrifying to stand in front of all these people” she admitted). Fellow nominees: Lisa Black of Lisa Black Jewellery, Amaia & Yolanda Torrubia of Turrubia & Torrubia, and Joseph Yushuva of Casa Reale.

When Rachel Shechtman of Story, accepted the Retail Award from Brooke Jaffe, she said “I’ve known (FGI President) Margaret Hayes for 12 years so this is an honor. One funny thing I have to share with you. My first job was working for Steven Stolman in his Southampton store 19 years ago.” Her fellow nominees were Katie Finnegan and Erica Bell of Hukkster, and Charlotte Neuville of The Fashion Chef.

Upon receiving the Beauty/Fragrance Corporate Award from Amy Astley, Ruhi Patil (International Flavors & Fragrances) thanked Fashion Group International for “creating such a wonderful platform”. She beat out Eileen Ahasic of The Estee Lauder Companies, Jean Michel Karam of Ioma Paris, and Sara Zucker of Nars Cosmetics.

Before Hal Rubenstein presented Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss with the Menswear Award, he told the audience, “Thank God for menswear otherwise I’d be freezing my ass off right now” (everyone laughed). Men are finally coming to the realization that there’s a world between work and weekend worth dressing for and the choices have never been so great.” He also reminded everyone that those powerhouse icons Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani both started as menswear designers.

For his part, Kerby called his work “a passion project and the greatest challenge of my life”. “It’s a one man business and I work from my apartment. I want to thank my family, who is my team. But I especially want to thank my girlfriend, for letting me max out my credit cards. I promise to buy you a ring. We will make it”.

Others in his category were Matthew Orley, Alex Orley & Samantha Florence of Orley; Ernest Sabine of Ernest Alexander; Ian Velardi of Ian Velardi.

When Karen Harvey got up to present her Karen Harvey Business Innovator Award (which is now in its second year), she noted “we are all fortunate to live in an era of robust innovation. Good ideas by themselves are really meaningless. This year I am pleased to honor Michael Preysman and Everlane for its refreshing idea of transparency. It reminds me that great ideas can come from anywhere. Everlane is a brand and not just a retailer. Michael is a founder/innovator”. For his part, Michael acknowledged that “without a great team you can’t accomplish very much.”

Last but not least was the Women’s Ready to Wear Award, the largest category with 8 nominees: Julie and Jason Alkire of Haus Alkire; Vengsarkar Budhu of Gavaskar; Charles Harbison of Harbison; Nary Manivong of Nary Manivong; Giovanna Randall of Honor; Tanya Taylor of Tanya Taylor; Frank Tell of Frank Tell; and Marissa Webb of Marissa Webb. Stephen Burrows announced the winner was Giovanna Randall of Honor.

An ‘honor’ indeed.

FGI President Margaret Hayes made her welcoming remarks before a room that included some of the brightest and newest stars in the worlds of fashion, beauty, fragrance, accessories, home/interior design, jewelry, retailing, and the media. She congratulated the group of talented nominees, who were whittled down from approximately 125 at the outset.

(FYI, I must admit that when I saw that Lisa Hoffman was one of the nominees, I was wondering whether her hubby, actor Dustin Hoffman, would be in attendance, as I have long been a huge fan. Unfortunately, he was not. And, unfortunately for Lisa, she did not win a Rising Star Award in her category, although she does get to go home to a true STAR!)

Ms. Hayes described the Awards, generously provided by Movado, as a “microcosm of the consuming public” and “an excellent barometer of future success” (past recipients include such as Tory Burch, Joseph Altuzarra, Phillip Lim, and Thom Browne). She admitted that this year was especially competitive and said, “each of you has a gift and the will to win”. She then advised the assembled guests to “eat quickly” (the event was called from 11:15 am- 2 pm) so that the awards could be given out in a timely manner (fyi, they ended at precisely 2pm).

Ralph Rucci

FGI’s Marylou Luther introduced Ralph Rucci, the Keynote Speaker, hailing him as “the one, the only, the TRULY original Ralph Rucci”. Among the advise and sage words of wisdom he imparted:

“Know in your heart that if you are sitting here, it’s an award already.”
“In your chosen quest to bring beautification to this planet (in whatever field you specialize in), know that it’s a rigor that’s non stop and it can be obsessive. You have to learn to walk on a razon’s edge of flexibility.”
“When problems occur, you must think of them as a challenge to find the solution.”
“You have to find your particular individual vision of your own style. Remain passionate. You can’t look left or right. You must look forward. You always have to seek and to find.”
“This is my 31st year of making collections. I use each collection as a way to find out something new about myself.”
“Kindness is the most important thing to show each other.”

Rising Star Award Presenters: Michael Boodro, Marion Fasel, Derek Lam, Chris Mitchell, Terron Schaefer, Laura Slatkin, Linda Wells, and Mickey Boardman. As the latter (better known as Mr. Mickey) is known for his over-the-top fashion persona, and especially his love of accessories, it seemed especially fitting that he give out the award in the accessories category. True to form, when he came onstage, he was lit up like a Christmas Tree in his multi colored sequined shirt. He proceded to say that he was thinking about taking his Stella McCartney bag onstage with him but decided not to. He also asked the guests to hold their applause until after all the nominees were named (“unless you’re applauding for me” he joked).

In addition, this year marked the launch of the Karen Harvey Business Innovator Award. When Miss Harvey took the stage, she said, “we are in an era of robust innovation” and “sometimes, something completely blows our minds.” “Execution is what makes true innovation great and helps us rethink things. That is why we selected The Runthrough (www.therunthrough.com), an online hub which brings “luxury, emerging designers, and the media together in a unique way.”

And since fashion is on all our minds, what with New York Fashion Week looming, this could not have come at a more perfect time. The ever popular Awards Ceremony and luncheon, which recognizes emerging talent in the fashion and design industries, and honors “eight outstanding individuals for their innovation, creativity, and accomplishments”, was completely sold out, with approximately 600 in attendance.

Among the designers in attendance, Ruben and Isabel Toledo, Ralph Rucci, Thom Browne, Catherine Malandrino and Tommy Hilfiger, who arrived with his beautiful, blonde, and towering wife Dee Ocleppo- she looked hip, fab, and quite 70’s, in an elongated wine fur vest and floor sweeping patterned pants by Tommy of course. (Tommy’s daughter, Alexandria Hilfiger, co designer for Nahm, was a nominee in the Women’s Ready- to- Wear category). Sponsors were Saks Fifth Avenue, In Style, Bebe, and Chic.TV. Movado generously provided the awards.

FGI’s President, Margaret Hayes, kicked things off with her short and sweet welcoming address, reminding the nominees that even if they don’t win an award, they should keep in mind that, “It’s not how you win, but how you play the game”. She also proudly pointed out that of the 8 presenters, three had been Rising Star Award recipients (Thom Browne, Christopher Coleman, and Monica Rich Kosann). The event was called from 11:15am to 2 pm and the always efficient and well organized Ms. Hayes chided the assembled guests that they had exactly “30 minutes” to eat their lunches (she was joking of course, but actually, the Bellinis were flying, the delicious meal WAS quickly and efficiently served, the awards were promptly handed out, and alas, by 2 pm, we were all merrily on our way).

Keynote Speakers this year were none other than Isabel & Ruben Toledo (FGI’s Amy Rossi described the couple as “mesmerizing, talented, and completely engaging”, a veritable “marriage of mind, spirit, and fashion” in her introduction). True to form, the couple – who seem to be ONE, almost joined at the hip, and capable of finishing one another’s sentences – took turns in addressing the young emerging talent who were being honored. That said, Isabel was definitely the ‘star’ of the two. Among her wise observations which were made after first acknowledging Margaret Hayes and heralding FGI as “THE organization for individuality”:

“Whatever you LOVE, whatever it is you are doing, keep doing it!” “Don’t lose sight of what it is you love.”

“It takes more than enthusiasm. You have to keep in touch with what drives you.”

“I love THE RAW” in everything. The un- perfected. Love is in THE RAW”. “You have time to perfect and edit later.”

“Appreciate every stage of your life. You will never be in the same place again.”

“For me, time is anything but the clock”

“The mere fact of DOING, creates the grooves that eventually identify you.”

“It’s important to be self propelled. Trust your instincts.”

“Pragmatism becomes your best friend. Learn how to do a lot with a little.”

“What keeps US going? With the help of the sun, we shine”.

At the end, Ruben said “We want to wish you good luck. If you need more passion, you know where to find us!”

Thanks to all the snow from yet another major snowfall to hit the East Coast, it was in fact a perfect day to enjoy a Bellini or a glass of wine, a warm and satisfying lunch (the food at all the Cipriani establishments is consistently great), and more importantly, was a perfect opportunity to toast fashion’s ‘Generation Next’.

During the course of FGI President Margaret Hayes’s welcoming address, she listed the 8 categories which are represented, emphasized the importance of programs which support emerging talent, and touched upon the selection process (there are over 100 nominees, approximately 1200 eligible voters – out of which 150 actually voted), and the significance of the final vote (it is a “reflection of the consuming public”). She then congratulated the finalists on their collective “talent, skill, commitment, and fortitude.”

Next up to the podium was the Host of the festivities, Jamie Pallot, Editorial Director of Conde Nast Digital, who wasted no time in his pronouncements: “Snow is the ‘new’ black”; “Fashion is the ‘new’ showbiz”; “The ‘Rising Star Awards’ are the ‘new’ Golden Globes”; and no, “I’m NOT the ‘new’ Ricky Gervais”, which got a laugh from the crowd.

He spoke about Fashion Group’s history (the organization was founded in 1930, and its founding members were Elizabeth Arden, Edith Head, and Eleanor Roosevelt), and made mention of the increasing high profile and importance of the Annual ‘Night of Stars’, listing some of fashion’s biggest names on the planet, who have been honored in the past. But as he observed, “The main reason we are here today, is to support emerging talent”, and he noted that the ‘Rising Stars’ could be considered as the “kid sister” of the ‘Night of Stars’. He continued, “While the finalists being honored today may not have reached the top of the pinnacle just yet, they are valiantly scaling the foothills of this business.”

At this point, a 4 course lunch was served, and then Norma Kamali, the Keynote Speaker, came up, delivering a speech that was short, sweet, to the point, and obviously came straight from the heart. She proceeded to weave in the word ‘star’ throughout her address, all the while humbly dismissing it vis a vis herself, saying, “I’m not a star and have never felt like a star”. (Sorry Norma, I think many would disagree; YOU ARE A STAR!)

She offered her own words of wisdom for the youthful finalists, some of whom may well be on the verge of ‘stardom’: “A Rising Star Award is a good thing and a bad thing. Being on the rise is a scary, awesome experience. I’m not a star. I’m just in my own little constellation in the sky and I love it. I do what pleases me. Becoming a star has its highs and lows and it could be a curse. You have to decide WHAT you want and WHO you are. Longevity is more important than stardom.”

Norma continued: “I’m grateful for all the times I’ve fallen because it’s forced me to get up and pick myself up and reinvent myself.” “I welcome you into my constellation. It’s a wonderful place to be.”

Then came the presentation of the awards. FYI, leave it to Linda Fargo to make the best comments. When she came up to announce the winner in the Retail division, she thanked all those who are forging ahead in the retail arena, doing their best to ensure that retail stays alive, considering that it might become an endangered species thanks to our current ‘virtual reality’.

These are the categories, the Award Presenters, and the winners:
