Whether Demna Gvasalia is comparable to the “emperor’s new clothes”—a genius ahead of his time or simply selling overhyped, ordinary, or ugly items—is one of the most debated topics in modern fashion.
 
While some view his work as brilliant, subversive commentary on consumerism, others see it as a high-concept hustle that turns ordinary items into luxury goods, mocking consumers in the process.

As is typical with Demna’s boldest collections, the online reaction to Gucci has been polarizing. I didn’t know what to expect from his Gucci runway debut. Let’s just say, notwithstanding some honestly good pieces, including a great pea jacket and a very chic 60 ’s-inspired knee-length coat  I could imagine Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy wearing (see lead shot), it was not the largely vampy, sleazy display that followed.

If nothing else, the collection proves how cyclical fashion is. It is a welcome respite for those who are a bit tired of voluminous, body-obscurant fashion and sick of hearing that skinny jeans, leggings, and jeggings are dead, to be avoided like the plague.

I was a bit underwhelmed with Maria Grazia Chiuri’s debut as creative director of Fendi. The show, which I kept mistaking for Dior under Chiuri’s tutelage, focused on craftsmanship and emotional durability, but lacked the usual Fendi excitement. 

It shifted away from the vibrant, playful, and high-drama aesthetic established by its predecessors, prioritizing sober wearables and commercial staples over spectacle. I wanted more!

Quite frankly, what I was expecting at Fendi was the plush, tactile, luxurious touchy-feely collection that was delivered with Louise Trotter’s sophomore outing at Bottega Veneta. A one-note wonder, Trotter is not! And she is proof that there is a way around using real animal fur.

The “fur” seen on recent Bottega Veneta runways and in stores is a combination of engineered synthetic materials and other alternatives. Trotter uses recycled fiberglass to create shaggy, fur-like textures described as “feeling like fur, moving like glass.”

For fall 2026, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons focus on the “continuous necessity of change,” presenting 60 looks through only 15 models who shed or added layers to showcase a controlled chaos of and the fluid nature of daily dressing.

While I found the Prada fall-winter 2026 collection to be a bit confusing at first, I understand the concept. The essence is a meditative exploration of the multifaceted, layered nature of modern women’s lives, blending practicality with luxury through a transformative process in clothing.

What Prada always excels in is that deliberate fusion of opposing worlds—luxury and utility, comfort and tailoring, history and rebellion—into a single, wearable look. Prada coats are always exemplary and collectible. Carolyn Bessette- Kennedy wore her many Prada coats on repeat.

An online auction for Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s wardrobe, hosted by The Fashion Auctioneer (it closes on March 3), features authentic pieces from her personal closet—including a trio of Prada coats she cherished and her favorite camel-toned iteration (seen above), estimated to fetch $20,000 – $30,000.

One of CBK’s signatures is her neat knee-length coats, worn over wide-legged jeans or well-tailored trousers. It’s a combination and proportion that is practical, flattering, urbane, and hard to beat.

For her Marni debut, Meryll Rogge resurrected and highlighted knee-length coats from the brand’s early original DNA, specifically the late 90’s/early 2000s era of founder Consuelo Castiglioni. Meryll describes them as “extremely fresh”, surprisingly relevant, and a way to start a new, grounded, and slightly eccentric chapter for the brand.

The reason Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s style is striking such a chord these days is the same reason traditional Milanese fashion does: its focus on pieces that feel intentional rather than trendy, that look so good.

Milanese fashion houses that typically exemplify sprezzatura (studied nonchalance) and quiet luxury—characterized by impeccable tailoring, high-quality materials, neutral hues, and understated elegance—include Giorgio Armani, Max Mara, Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana, Jil Sander, and Tod’s.

Although its roots are in the Marche region rather than Milan, Tod’s is firmly embedded in the Milanese fashion scene and represents the pinnacle of “Made in Italy” craftsmanship.  The fall 2026 collection is a step forward for Creative Director Matteo Tamburini, who continues to gain confidence, moving the brand beyond just classic staples into more experimental territory while remaining true to its roots.

I could not help but look at Jil Sander and think that Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy would adore this entire collection.  Designed by Simone Belotti, it is a confident, sophisticated evolution of the brand that successfully blends minimalism with a new, personal, and slightly surreal narrative.

Belotti focuses on an intimate, restrained, and precise aesthetic, successfully moving beyond mere reproduction of the house codes to add his own perspective. Not an easy feat, look at Calvin Klein!

Another night, another (dozen or so) galas here in the city that never sleeps. On Wednesday evening, I attended the “28th Annual Waxman Collaboration for a Cure: A Celebration of Breakthroughs” at Apella, an event space overlooking the East River.

For nearly 50 years, the Samuel Waxman Institute has been instrumental in cancer research, and this year it officially became the Samuel Waxman Institute for Aging and Cancer, addressing the rising incidence of cancer associated with aging. They will operate as a subsidiary of The Mark Foundation for Cancer, serving as the global hub for collaborating with scientists worldwide to understand how the biology of aging influences cancer.

Honorees were Jeff Settleman, Ph.D, Senior Vice President, Chief Scientific Director, Oncology Research and Development at Pfizer; Robert Wiener, Chairman Emeritus of Maxx Properties; and last but definitely not least, Jean Shafiroff, philanthropist, TV personality, and author.

The evening began with a full cocktail bar in a rather cramped and narrow space, along with a silent auction featuring Marchesa jewelry, a Carlos Falchi handbag, Tom Ford cosmetics, watches, luxury bedding, weekend trips, concert tickets for Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, and Sting at Mohegan Sun, and other items.

This was a rather intimate gala as they go, and it became apparent that the dining room was far from cavernous, to say the least. While we consumed a tasty burrata with asparagus, tomatoes, sugar snap peas in vinaigrette, Samuel Waxman spoke of the “lab accident” which led to the discovery of a Vitamin A derivative used for leukemia in the ‘80s and still in use by over 50,000 people this year.

He expounded on the fact that age is the primary factor in getting cancer, but they don’t know why, and mentioned that the spirit of collaboration with the nine-year-old Mark Foundation will do more to save lives.

Speaking of aging, there were perhaps a handful of young folks (meaning anyone under 50) at this event. My seat mates were the illustrious Susan Gutfreund and her jaded “purse rat” chihuaha Lucky – “he sleeps through everything – the theatre, the opera, galas, whatever,” his owner informed me – as well as Rebecca Seawright’s hubby Jay Hershenson who dared to begin a story mentioning Michael Bloomberg (a former colleague of Gutfreund’s late husband John) and was all but cut off.

This, along with just about everything else displeased Madame Gutfreund – the lighting (“You could do plastic surgery in here,”), the flowers, the meal, the program, the company – you name it. I can report that during dinner, there were several show tunes performed by John Riddle (Phantom of the Opera, Frozen on Broadway) and by Shayna Steele (Hairspray, Rent, Hair on Broadway), and Lucky did not react; however, if you get too close, he will bare his fangs.

After the meal of filet mignon or branzino (basically, the waiters took a 50/50 scattershot approach regardless of what you actually ordered lol), it was finally time for the honors. After a video of Jean was shown, she rose to accept the award from Assemblywoman Seawright.

Jean’s speech encompassed her love of philanthropy despite her “very middle-class roots,” her desire to do philanthropic work despite her two degrees from Columbia, and her tireless hosting of kick-off events for philanthropic galas in her home, while also serving on eight charitable boards.

She told the story of how her father received a diagnosis of cancer at 86 years old, but with excellent management of his disease, lived to the age of 93, eventually succumbing to something else unrelated. She also praised the Waxman Institute for its great work in putting the raised funds to good use. Side note: With matching funds, I believe they raised something like $2M last night.

After the other honorees had their turn, it was time for the live auction – cruises, dinners, including one at Rao’s, but apparently, there were no takers for the Napa wine-tasting trip. Where’s Mr. Big from “Sex and the City”, who famously wanted to move to Napa because he was tired. And who can forget Carrie’s retort: “If you’re tired you take a napa, you don’t move to Napa.”

The overarching themes in fashion these days are individuality and personal expression. They can’t be forced or manufactured. Diane Keaton was the real deal.

I always admired Diane, a trailblazing style icon and constant source of personal inspiration, who consistently made my Best Dressed Lists and was the subject of many articles. Diane eschewed trends du jour and adopted a Dandy-ish style that strikes a balance between tomboyish and feminine elements. Her style was a declaration of individuality, long praised for its authenticity, humor, and grace.

Diane’s effortless mix of menswear and monochromatic chic defined ageless style. Quite frankly, she became more beautiful and stylish with age. Both Diane and I have a soft spot for black turtlenecks. I agree they are the most flattering items you can have in your wardrobe.

Diane preferred to cover up from head to toe, but instead of drowning herself in slouchy oversized clothes, she opted for well-tailored jackets and coats, and made sure she emphasized her waist. When Diane wore skirts (pencil skirts or full skirts), they were knee-length; all the better to show off her great gams!

Diane was a poster child for the idea that true personal style is rejecting trends and owning who you are, developing a signature that really works and shows you to your best advantage. Keaton’s style reflected her unique and joyful personality, making her fashion choices feel authentic and charismatic. She famously described her style as, “I am just being me, insane,” highlighting her embrace of individuality over conforming to trends.

The most impressive aspect of Diane Keaton’s contribution to fashion was her championing of an individualistic, androgynous style that rejected prevailing norms, cementing her as a timeless icon. Rather than conforming to trends, she consistently dressed for herself, making menswear-inspired looks both chic and accessible for women.

Diane was a master of mixing masculine pieces like suits, ties, and vests with feminine touches like billowy skirts or pearls, and she always added her own bold and eccentric twist, most notably with her use of oversized hats, statement belts, and unique patterns. She was always associated with the bold combination of black and white.

In 2024, she teamed up with Hudson Grace for the brand’s first-ever collaboration. Featuring decor, kitchenware, and pet accessories, all done in graphic bold black and white. The line was a perfect fit for Keaton, who had an eye for interior design for years, publishing a book on the subject and sharing several of her own residences.

Meanwhile, I am running out to buy Diane’s book, Diane Keaton Fashion First, published by Rizzoli in 2024 with a foreword by Ralph Lauren. This book is a comprehensive exploration of Keaton’s fashion journey, from her early days in Hollywood to her current status as a style icon. It will be on many gift lists this year, and it’s a must-read for anyone interested in fashion history and personal style.

Diane was a rare breed in Hollywood, a true maverick who refused to bow to trends or subscribe to red carpet dress codes. She always championed her own eccentric style, wearing pants to formal awards ceremonies, bowler hats to balls, and neon colors to run errands.

Her fearless approach to fashion was truly liberating. She often incorporated quirky, playful, and daring elements, showing how to mix classics with dramatic details to create a personal statement. One great example, more of a breastplate than a necklace, was commissioned by art and antique dealer Sukey Forbes as a gift for her dear friend (and founding member of Burning Man), Jennifer Raiser. Ms. George was given a bag of charms, trinkets, and talismans from over 60 artists, representing two decades of the event, and she had to make sense of it. She named it “The Playa Provides.”

The commissioned piece, Jennifer’s most famous, was the only piece of jewelry featured at The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., during an exhibition called “No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man.” The 1996 inaugural coat and dress Jennifer designed for Tipper Gore are also on display in the museum.

Jennifer fell into her accessory business completely by accident. The Parsons grad burst on the fashion scene in 1982, partnering with good friend David Rubin to start Jennifer George Inc. Jennifer’s fashion shows soon became must see events for all the top fashion editors, and her very consistent designs, routed in “classic American sportswear” were sold at the top stores and routinely editorialized on the pages of all the major fashion magazines. I was Jennifer’s editor at Harper’s Bazaar.

Ms. George closed her doors on Seventh Avenue in the late 90s to focus on other interests, including, but not exclusively, jewelry. A former customer asked Jennifer to help clean out her closet. Her jewelry box was filled with items that she never wore, but couldn’t part with.

“I threw it all in a baggie and took it home, promising her I’d figure out something to do with all of her sentimental baubles so that she could wear them again. And my first necklace was born”. That was about 25 years ago, says Jennifer, who scours flea markets and tag sales, collecting vintage jewelry, findings, beads, and more, all of which are used to create her unique jewelry and accessories.

Each piece is a testament to the sentimental value we attach to our belongings, and Jennifer’s creations allow you to carry these memories with you in a new, wearable form. Ah! The Merry Month of May! This is a busy time of the year for Vanessa Noel and Kokin. Ms. Noel is excited about the launch of her first fine jewelry collection later this year. Jewelry is a longtime love, along with shoes, many bejeweled.

Not counting a $14,000 custom bridal veil with pearls and crystals Kokin created, the most expensive hat he made ($6,000) was for a woman who attended the FLO Awards Luncheon in 2019. She wore a printed Libertine dress and jacket, and Kokin made a silk top hat covered in flowers.

Sherry Kirschner Berz

Sherry Kirschner Berz, February 3, 1951- March 6, 2025, died at the age of 74 from complications following a stroke. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by everyone and everything she loved, as was her wish.

In addition to myself and my husband Charles Weintraub, she is survived by her husband of 54 years, David; her sons Douglas and Alexander; her brother- and sister-in-law, Neal and Linda Berz; and their children Sarah, Micaela, and Charlie. She was the cherished daughter of the late Herman and Toby Kirschner, who emigrated from Czechoslovakia and Poland, respectively, settling in New York in the late 1930s.

Sherry was the strongest, most exceptional woman I’ve ever known. As sisters, we shared a very special bond. Born and raised in New York City, Sherry pursued her artistic talent early, attending the High School of Music and Art. She continued this pursuit at the Museum of Modern Art and the Corcoran School in Washington, D.C.

While studying at the Corcoran, she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Speech Pathology and Audiology from George Washington University, where she was awarded a fellowship for her graduate studies.

Sherry’s husband David and I were members of the class of 1970. We both received our BA’s that year while my brother-in-law was a graduate of the GWU law school where he received his JD in 1973.

In 1992, they established the David R. and Sherry Kirschner Berz Fund for Religious Studies at GWU, which supports the activities of the Department of Religion to enrich undergraduate and graduate programs. In 1997, they established the David R. and Sherry Kirschner Berz Endowed Dean’s Discretionary Fund to meet the school’s most pressing needs.

A gifted artist, devoted family member, and dedicated community volunteer, Sherry’s life was marked by creativity and an enduring commitment to making the world more beautiful. Sherry’s artwork was featured in numerous exhibitions and galleries throughout Washington, D.C., and is included in private collections and publications.

Her passion for art extended beyond her personal work. For over twenty years, she was a docent at the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum, where she shared her love and knowledge of art with countless visitors.

Sherry and David are dedicated art collectors. I remember Sherry meeting Faith Ringgold (October 8, 1930 – April 13, 2024) at the ACA Gallery in Chelsea. She could not stop talking about how incredible this woman was. Sherry and David subsequently purchased one of Faith’s paintings, which is proudly displayed in one of their art-filled homes.

A diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in 1967 resulted in ongoing health problems, one more serious than the next. Sherry never complained, and she never let them define her. If anything, it intensified her love for and appreciation for life. Sherry lived life to the fullest and soaked it all in. All her senses were heightened.

Art informed everything she did, from travel and architecture to interior design, food, and fashion. There was no question we were related. Just 18 months my junior, Sherry and I sounded and looked alike, and as little girls, we were often dressed alike. Our father was a clothing manufacturer, and we frequently had our coats made by a tailor. We got a taste of haute couture early on.

We inherited our love of fashion from our parents, who were not only movie stars but impeccably dressed for every occasion. They taught us that fashion has to do with decorum, self-respect for yourself, and others.

Sherry and I had similar loves and tastes and shared an eye for design and detail, but she had her own unique look. Unsurprisingly, much thought was put into Sherry’s outfit for burial. As a number of her friends noted, she was so innately stylish that it would be impossible not to factor that in, even at this somber moment.

As my greatest supporter, I know Sherry would undoubtedly love whatever I chose to wear in her honor in those last hours, but I put myself together, adding a necklace Sherry gifted me and a Chanel bag that belonged to her.

An avid tennis player, golfer, and New York Yankees fan, Sherry prioritized uninterrupted viewing of major sporting events. Sherry was dedicated to her synagogue, Washington Hebrew Congregation, where she served on the Arts Committee and contributed to the redesign and renovation of the main sanctuary, among other things.

Sherry’s commitment to her community was unwavering. She took on leadership roles on the board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (now Breakthrough T1D) and served as President of the American Friends of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Israel. Her contributions to these organizations left a lasting impact on the communities they served.

Her vibrant spirit, artistic talent, and profound love for family, friends, and community will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew her. For me, there is no replacement.

The French-born London-based photographer is perhaps best known for his disarmingly gritty, intimate, provocative celebrity portraits done predominantly in black and white black.

Throughout his career, Haddi has been celebrated for his unique ability to see past the façade of celebrity and tap into the raw, authentic nature of his subjects. Michel’s subjects are typically shot with minimum staging, often in movement and slightly off-guard, creating a sense of authenticity.

Spontaneity is a key element in Michel’s work, a highly valued quality. Rooted in the present while remaining respectful of the past, Michel believes that as a photographer, one must feel the person before them and quickly develop an idea that works. Each image must have a meaning, a purpose, and a story to tell.

In October 2023, Haddi’s work was featured at Photo London, the international photography fair. Michel’s diverse work was celebrated in a major solo exhibition, “Michel Haddi: Beyond Fashion,” at 29 Arts in Progress Gallery in Milan. The first ran from October 19th to December 22nd, 2023, and the second from January 16th to March 16th, 2024.

Haddi manages a publishing house, MHS Publishing, based in London, which publishes his books. First published in 2017, Michel Haddi created a series of beautifully designed collectible books celebrating iconic figures titled “The Legend.” “There are no advertisements; that’s what ruined fashion magazines,” opines Michel about the collection of artistic tributes to his subjects.

Michel was in New York this past October shooting for his upcoming film “The Legend by Michel Haddi—New York Stories, due out later this year. Michel and Sarah Coldron, his wife and business partner, stayed at the Hotel Chelsea. Haddi lived right behind the iconic hotel in the early 1990s.

During 15 days of nonstop shooting organized by close friend Nicole Fischelis, Michel photographed about 20 “amazing, talented people” in well-known locations around town.

I was honored that Michel wanted to include me in the tome along with fashion designers Frederick Anderson and Anna Sui, Amy Fine Collins, Kara Young, Kim Williams, Freddie Lieba, MAO PR honchos Mauricio and Roger Padilha, and iconic model Alva Chinn, among others.

While living in the US, Michel photographed many high-profile celebrities, including Isabella Rossellini, Martin Scorsese, Denzel Washington, Debbie Harry, Patti LaBelle, and the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Their images will also be included in the book.

Michel often wonders how he could have ended up as a photographer, having been raised in an orphanage from age four. Michel was born in 1956 in Paris to a French soldier father he never knew and a Moroccan-born Arabic mother.

Haddi moved between foster homes until the age of six and eventually ended up at the Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul Orphanage in the French capital. During this time, Michel’s mother brought him copies of Vogue, which fascinated him throughout his childhood.

Piqued by a particular shot by Helmut Newton, Michel was inspired to leave the city and become a photographer. His stroke of luck was working as a waiter in a gay restaurant in Paris, where he met Grace Jones, artists, models, and fashion designers.

Once back in London, Michel met his lifelong mentor, Victor Herbert, who set him on the path to success. In 1980, Haddi opened his first studio and began collaborating with famous magazines such as British Vogue and American GQ.

Michel admits he often transgresses the rules, marches to his own beat, and can be seen as eccentric and complex. Coincidentally, Michel’s name was initially spelled Adi. He points out that in Hebrew, it means “jewel” or “my witness,” and in Arabic, it means “the guide.” “So I suppose I’m a jewel, an eccentric, a witness, and a guide of my short time on earth.”

The best advice Michel ever received was from photographer Peter Knapp, who said, “You must do at all costs only what you like, and no one should tell you what to do.” Michel is proud to say that he has upheld that motto.

The Social Justice Center at FIT aims to address the systemic problems faced by BIPOC (black, Indigenous, and other people of color) youth, college students, and working professionals in the fields that drive the creative economy.

The SJC, recognized on Fast Company’s 2023 World Changing Ideas, offers meaningful support and services to help BIPOC students and employees succeed in the creative industries, including fashion. They believe these efforts can significantly increase diversity and equity in these industries.

On Tuesday, I attended a summer lunch hosted by The Social Justice Center at FIT. The lunch featured a conversation with Dr. Joyce Brown, President of FIT, and Bakari Sellers, CNN Political Analyst and former Representative from South Carolina. It occurred on the 8th floor of the David Dubinsky Building in the Student Center.

Of course, there were the media stars. Seated next to me was Sunny Hostin, co-host of ABC’s morning talk show The View, for which she received nominations for Daytime Emmy Awards, and Senior Legal Correspondent and Analyst for ABC News.

During a lovely lunch of chilled soup and a salad of sliced chicken breast and artichokes, Dr. Joyce Brown made her welcoming remarks: “Our goal is to change the face of the creative industry.”We start with teenagers, but our main focus is on college students. Our first cohort will graduate next year, and we are beyond proud.”

Dr. Brown observed that young people today have grown up under the cloud of the 9/11 attack, bombings of churches and synagogues, a global pandemic, and an attempt to overthrow our government, and more than ever, they need role models and guidance as they seek to create social change, social justice.

“An author once wrote that the only way to cope with change is to create it. And that author was Bakari Sellers,” said Dr. Brown. She wanted to invite Bakari to join her in a conversation because Sellers is an important voice in the move for change, and he calls for the empowerment of young people to be that voice for change.

Bakari Sellers is the author of the New York Times bestseller My Vanishing Country: A Memoir, offering passionate political and social commentary and analysis informed by first-hand experience inside one of the nation’s major political parties and The Moment.

Named as one of the nation’s most influential African Americans, Sellers made history in 2006 when, at just 22 years old, he defeated a 26-year incumbent State Representative to become the youngest member of the South Carolina state legislature and the youngest African American elected official. As Bakari begins to speak, it is clear he has “youth” on his mind.

“The Gay Rights Movement, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Women’s Rights Movement are all being led by young people, and we should get out of the way and let them lead” -Bakari Sellers.

“This generation has persevered more than any other generation before it, and they have lived through so much and seen so much the least we can do is to give them more grace,” notes Sellers who went on to say that he uses the word “grace” a lot these days.

Bakari sees the criminal justice system as not broken. It works the way it was engineered to work. What we need to do is deconstruct that system so that it performs. During his conversation with Dr. Brown, he touched on recurring themes with passion, insight, and humor, including “isms” (Institutional racism, antisemitism), the criminal justice system, and George Floyd.

“The price of change for certain groups of individuals in this country is too damn high. One of my responsibilities in life is to drive down the cost of change for people of color. If we want to see change, it should not require you to go out and have to give your life on a sidewalk.”

Like Dr. Brown, Sellers credits George Floyd with “starting it all.” The Fair Housing Act would not have happened if Dr. King had not been assassinated, and we can’t talk about criminal justice reform without talking about George Floyd’s death, opines Sellers. “Justice is not the conviction of Derek Chauvin. Justice is George Floyd being able to raise his daughters,” says Sellers, who believes that understanding history is key.

Sellers blames the social media and the 24 hour news cycle (even though he is part of it), to the “erosion and decaying” of society, but Bakari thinks our biggest problem is the “lack of empathy”. As he put it, “You have to love your neighbor even when they don’t love you”. Dr Browne agreed but also thought apathy was also a big part of the problem.

Even though Dr. Brown said she didn’t want to get “political”, she brought up “The Debate” towards the end of the conversation. Dr. Brown asked Sellers what he was anticipating on Thursday night. Sellers predicts that this will be a night when more than 95 percent of this room watches, like a “car crash,” to see how a 78-year-old and an 81-year-old will do at 9 p.m.

Dr. Brown noted that the “real fear” is that “Biden will drop dead tomorrow and Kamala Harris will become President,” but Sellers believes that the biggest problem is that we have two candidates, both of whom live in the past. “They cannot articulate a clear vision for the future because they may not be a part of it.”

Speaking of the future, I look forward to reading Seller’s new book, “The Moment: Thoughts on the Race Reckoning That Wasn’t and How We All Can Move Forward Now,” which was gifted to all luncheon guests on their way out.

In today’s economy, it is remarkable that one can buy an outfit for the same price as a latte. Fast fashion companies like H&M, Topshop, Forever 21, Fashion Nova, and Shein have been churning out cheap garments for years, and newcomer Temu has exploded since its 2022 debut by offering items for little more than pocket change.

Manufacturing on a mass scale is not only environmentally irresponsible, wasteful, and, in most cases, unethical, but it also results in an inferior product. Garments wear out quickly, and because they can be replaced so inexpensively, customers are motivated to throw out the old and buy new so regularly that these items are considered “disposable clothing.”

Overproduction has contributed to global waste on a colossal level. According to Earth.org, approximately 92 million tons of apparel end up in landfills every year. The average US consumer throws away over 80 lbs of clothing annually. The fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global wastewater and 10% of carbon emissions. Additionally, nearly 10% of the microplastics dispersed in the ocean each year come from textiles.

In recent years, “slow fashion,” which prioritizes quality over quantity, values fair labor practices, and carefully considers how to reduce the impact on the environment, has gained momentum. As a result, vintage apparel, upcycling, and resale have become more mainstream, and designers passionate about sustainability are acting to align themselves with responsible, eco-friendly sources, suppliers, and manufacturers.

On Tuesday, TFL debuted its inaugural showcase at Studio 250 (250 West 40th Street), presented by KnitUp, Cobalt, Recurate, Natural Fiber Welding, Alternew, Style With Substance, and The Phluid Project. The showcase features designer and contemporary luxury brands that prioritize sustainability, technological innovation, ethical labor practices, and those shifting from linear to circular models, which aim to create a closed-loop system, reducing waste and maximizing the lifespan of clothing and textiles.

Eight designers from all over the world are exhibiting their collections through June 15th. The group is diverse, and while each designer has a unique story and point of view, they share the same core environmental values and foster fair labor practices.

The featured designers include Vaishali Shadangule (Vaishali S), Maxine Trowbridge (Eve & Max), Tamara Davydova (Minimalist), Paige Andreas (Arianna Andreas), Elizabeth Goodwin Wellborn (Stick & Ball), Rob Smith (The Phluid Project), Caroline Priebe (Driftless Goods), and Daryl Kerrigan (Daryl K).

Coinciding with the showcase launch on Tuesday evening, industry leaders gathered for a private cocktail reception and discussed new regulations reshaping the fashion industry. Attendees included former Creative Director, Global Forecaster, and Visual Storyteller for Saks Fifth Avenue, Ferragamo and Macy’s, Nicole Fischelis, and award-winning designer, animal rights activist, founder of The Tiny Tim Rescue Fund, and Director of Fashion for Executive and Professional Studies at Parsons/The New school, John Bartlett.

Redefining Luxury

TFL’s Executive in Residence and Advocate for Legal Excellence in Luxury Fashion and Sustainability, Elizabeth Henries, joined the conversation via Zoom from London, where she had just received an award for the Luxury Law Firm of the Year – Independent Law Firm.

Henries is the Founder and CEO of Henries PLLC, a boutique firm that provides integrated legal services to some of the world’s best-known luxury companies. Teri Agins, an award-winning journalist, author, lecturer, consultant, and former senior writer and columnist at The Wall Street Journal, served as the moderator.

“The fashion industry is redefining luxury beyond the high price tag,” said Agins. “New luxury is quiet, modern, and responsible.” Henries agreed that consumers are looking for unique, artisan pieces, and they’re excited to explore new, custom brands like KnitUp, which utilizes digital technology that enables individuals to design their own pieces by selecting silhouettes, yarn qualities, color, and stitch patterns from KnitUp’s library.

“There’s a new generation of savvy consumers who are done with showing logos and cheap fads. They’re interested in upcycling, searching for high-quality and exclusive merchandise,” Agins said. Two retailers that Henries feels offer this experience and product assortment are London-based Wolf & Badger, a global online marketplace for independent brands with storefronts in London, NYC, and Los Angeles, and Cult Mia, an online platform that specializes in curating pieces that can’t be found elsewhere.

Wolf & Badger’s mission is building a community of ethical brands and conscious consumers who positively impact the world. Cult Mia requires every brand they carry to align with one of their four key values – sustainability, protecting local heritage, minority empowerment, and social consciousness. A portion of every sale order is donated to a charity.

Breaking Away From Outdated Models

“The traditional brick-and-mortar department store just doesn’t work anymore in the world of e-commerce. There’s too much product for that model,” Henries said. She highlighted UK retailer Selfridges as an example of a company reinventing itself to stay competitive.

The store’s new initiative, Project Earth, offers consumers more sustainable ways to shop. “RESELFRIDGES” consists of the five Rs: Resale (pre-owned), Repair, Refill, Rent, and Recycle. Shopping for pre-owned merchandise at a discount and renting designer apparel is not exactly a new concept, but it’s a vital step in the right direction for a large retailer.

The store also introduced a concierge service where customers can bring their favorite handbags, apparel, shoes, and jewelry to be repaired, reducing waste and consumption.

“Sustainability can be a huge cost saver. When a company starts making sustainable choices, they start saving money,” Henries said. “They’re shipping less and using less material, so they will inevitably spend less.” She explained that investors are becoming increasingly interested in sustainability, and many are approaching these ventures from an artisan perspective, where the goal is to preserve the art form through business practice and education to ensure that future generations can continue the craft.

“That’s encouraging,” Agins agreed. “I think sustainability is creativity, innovation, and exclusivity. That’s what the consumers want – what the younger generation wants.” She added, “My generation grew up with high-end clothes still in the department stores. We knew quality, and we understood connoisseurship, and I think that’s something the younger generation is trying to get back to because they see it in the vintage clothes — they see the workmanship.”

TFL’s Kate Sheldon sees all this promise embodied in the showcase participants and their companies. “As consultants, designers, retailers, and media members, we have a responsibility to present better options to customers, and this is a room full of people trying to do that.” She said, “It will be hard, but incredible things are happening, and I’m excited for the future.”
