A Sign of the Times:

Fashion Group International held its Fall/Winter 2003 American & European RTW Audio-Visual Presentations today and boy, is it ever obvious how the current world situation has effected us. Not only did attendees have to present photo id’s before entering the Time & Life Building where the event was held, but once inside, the lobby resembled an airport more than an office building – we all had to put our bags through a metal detector conveyer belt.

The twice yearly presentation, which serves to talk about the season’s biggest trends, also has a post slide show panel discussion with a group of the industry’s pros….moderated by somebody different each time. Today’s ‘guest’ moderator was Ralph Rucci, who admitted he had never attended one of these events before. Among the topics of discussion were the effect of world affairs on the business of fashion, how magazines mix fantasy and reality, how they ‘edit’ each season, what the stores feel will be their ‘best bets’ going forward, and more. You can hear more about it during this coming week’s New York Industry Fashion Report.
