Tanner Fletcher’s Wedding Wear Debut

Tanner Fletcher began selling wedding wear about a year ago due to one of their first genuinely viral moments. When Puerto Rican rap superstar Bad Bunny wore a chic white satin blazer adorned with three-dimensional silk bows in blue from the SS 23 collection for a spread for TIME, their customers started buying the Bad Bunny Bow Suit for their weddings and sending them pictures.

The high demands led to custom requests, and before long, Tanner Richie and Fletcher Kasell thought, why not just make a wedding collection?

“We just wanted to create a brand that took out the idea that ‘you don’t belong here’ [mentality]. You’ll see a more queer take on weddings. And given the times we’re in, we want to ensure that it is seen and known.” – Tanner Richie of Tanner Fletcher.

Why not, indeed? After all, they don’t have that much competition in what they are doing. “There are not many places for men, in general, to get their wedding looks,” observes Tanner Richie. “There’s nowhere for queer people to shop. If it’s at a bridal store, there’s, like, one suit on the rack”.

Given the obvious implications of how Trump’s election will likely impact LGBTQ+ people everywhere, Tanner and Fletcher are even more dedicated to developing a full-blown wedding collection. This collection will include suits, blazers, accessories, and other attire suitable for all aspects of a wedding, from the ceremony to the reception.

“We just don’t really like new things. We’re inspired by the past.” – Tanner Richie.

On Thursday, April 10th, Tanner Fletcher held their debut “Going to the Chapel” Wedding collection at St. Paul’s German Evangelical Lutheran Church on West 22nd Street in Manhattan. It was an “Only in New York” moment, giving new meaning to “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.”

As it turned out, this was not just a fashion show but a bona fide event. The beautiful church, with its stunning stained glass windows and ornate wooden pews, was filled to the rafters, and many guests, including Andrew Yu and Jill Kargman, came dressed in Tanner Fletcher.

There was entertainment: The Late Show Gospel Choir belted out rousing versions of The Chapel of Love and Oh Happy Day. There were moments of levity: in front of each seat was a copy of Tanner Fletcher’s 10 Commandments of Wedding Planning.

These commandments, with their tongue-in-cheek suggestions like, ‘Thou Shall Remember That The Wedding Is One Day, But The Marriage Is Forever; Thou Shall Not DIY Thy Sanity Away; Thou Shall Not Set A Budget (& Cry About It Later)’, added a fun twist to the event.

Then, a big surprise: a couple got married, saying their emotionally charged, highly personal vows in front of, basically, a room filled with strangers. There was not a dry eye in the house. I hoped there would be a wedding because why waste a beautiful church?

I hoped it would be Richie Tanner and Fletcher Kasell, who are business partners and have been in a committed relationship for about 8 years. While they haven’t gotten married yet, they have talked about the idea.

The wedding collection is very Tanner Fletcher: classic and irreverent, just as expected. All the TF signatures are there: lace, tailoring, toile (this time made into a sequined suit), Victorian inspiration, flower motifs, denim, and the color palette (black, ivory, and a touch of blue).

And, of course, there are beautiful organza pussy bow blouses with ruffled high collars and pronounced bows. Each guest was gifted a mini canvas boating bag printed with the word “love you mostest.”

Inside the bag was a bouquet of baby’s breath, courtesy of Poppy Flowers, a vanilla bourbon-scented candle from tajacollection.com, and a card from The Mostest Wedding Planners, www.gomostest.com with a barcode offering a free 15-minute event planning consultation, just in case you need help with your nuptials.
